The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The Security Assistant Manager is responsible for supervising a designated team of Field Training Officers (FTOs) and Security Rangers, ensuring that their activities align with departmental standards and protocols. This role includes developing the weekly schedule to meet security needs based on zoo attendance projections, special posting requirements, and staffing considerations such as PTO and sick leave. Additionally, the Security Assistant Manager oversees the training program, ensures comprehensive incident reporting, and conducts regular inspections to verify that equipment, security keys, and camera systems are fully functional. They respond to incidents and emergencies, providing first aid and CPR as needed, while maintaining situational awareness across all zoo grounds and surrounding areas. The role requires effective communication during shift transitions, a proactive approach to public safety, and a commitment to fostering a welcoming, guest-focused environment through positive interactions with both guests and colleagues. The Assistant Manager of Security will perform the duties of Manager in the absence of the Security Manager.

- Serve as the assigned supervisor for a designated team of Field Training Officers (FTOs) and Security Rangers, ensuring their activities align with departmental standards and protocols.
- Develop the weekly schedule to accommodate prospectus-driven security needs, zoo attendance projections, special posting requirements, PTO requests, sick leave, and other staffing considerations.
- Oversee the security operations training program and supervise Field Training Officers (FTOs) to ensure all personnel meet departmental standards.
- Communicate essential information verbally to incoming Security Officers during shift transitions.
- Ensure thorough logging and reporting of all incidents and accidents, including evidence collection and obtaining witness statements in compliance with departmental protocols.
- Conduct daily inspections to ensure all equipment and security keys are serviceable and properly organized.
- Identify and address any potential public safety hazards at the beginning of each shift.
- Inspect construction sites to ensure protective barriers are in place at the beginning of each shift.
- Respond to all major incidents, accidents, and emergencies, whether observed, reported, or dispatched.
- Perform first aid and CPR as necessary.
- Complete investigations as directed by higher authority.
- Maintain situational awareness of all areas surrounding zoo properties and monitor any protests impacting the zoo.
- Verify that all camera, access control, and alarm systems are functioning properly, and obtain director approval for any identified issues, deficiencies, or recommended repairs.
- Conduct post checks to ensure that personnel understand their duties and responsibilities, and that all posts are maintained in a clean and orderly condition.
- Maintain a friendly working environment for security officers, leadership team, departments and able to provide optimal guest service during all work-related situations.
- Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
- Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest - do not wait to be asked.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned.
Your Skills and Expertise

- Able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to communicate clearly in English.
- Able to thoroughly, completely, understandably, and correctly complete incident/accident reports.
- Able to handle, calmly and effectively, various types of public contact situations.
- Able to contact San Antonio Park Police, SAPD, SAFD, Bexar County Sheriff, EMS, or other emergency agency to clearly, calmly, distinctly and correctly report an emergency requiring assistance.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and after-hour assignments including overnight and swing shift.
- Associate degree in criminal justice or related field. Experience may be substituted for degree.
- Two (2) years of security related work.
- Valid Texas driver's license.
- Certification as a first aid and CPR Instructor.
- Spanish fluency is highly desirable.
