Job Description

JOB SUMMARY :

Uses knowledge of English and Spanish to provide assistance to certificated staff in academic instruction and language proficiency assessment of students identified as English learners; and performs a variety of related services requiring English and Spanish.

SUPERVISION :

Receives supervision from a manager at or above the level of Coordinator. Receives technical instructions from a teacher and / or other certificated staff member.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Tutors students identified as English learners to improve their proficiency in English and their understanding of curriculum subjects.
  • Assists assigned students with challenges related to school achievement as a result of language barriers.
  • Promotes the well-being of students by helping them develop a positive attitude / self-image and ability to cooperate and interact with other students and adults.
  • Performs a variety of tasks that support classroom instruction.
  • Consults with teacher on ways to better meet students' needs.
  • Performs related tasks as required in program planning, implementation, and operation regarding assigned students.
  • Serves as interpreter as needed.
  • Translates correspondence to parents in English or Spanish.
  • Administers oral language proficiency and academic tests in English and Spanish to students.
  • Transcribes oral answers into written form using state-and District-approved tests.
  • Contacts school staff and parents to explain meaning of test scores obtained.
  • Tests students on a one-to-one basis.
  • Verifies student cumulative record information.
  • Posts, maintains, and updates testing data.
  • May travel from one work location to another, using personal transportation.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION / TRAINING

  • Any combination of the following paid experience amounting to one year : providing instructional assistance interpreting or translating services in the English and Spanish language.
  • AND-
  • High school graduation or the equivalent.
  • AND-
  • Completion of at least 48 semester units (or 72 quarter units) at the college level, -OR-
  • Possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, -OR-
  • Pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
  • LICENSES / CERTIFICATES / REGISTRATIONS (At time of appointment and during employment)

  • An appropriate, valid California driver license.

    ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION : This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 34. Most positions in this class work 6hours / 9months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

    THE EXAMINATION :

  • Written Examination. WEIGHT : 100%
  • Assessment Examination. WEIGHT : Pass / Fail. This requirement can be met by one of the following : Completion of at least 48 semester units or (72 quarter units) at the college level, -OR- Possession of an Associate's or higher-level degree, -OR- pass the Assessment Examination.
  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.
  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.
  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.
  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.

    SCHOOL POLICE OFFICERS :

    PERS Retirement; Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance. Benefits are based on a 40-hour workweek.

    School Police Officers Differential compensation :

    POST Intermediate Certification : 6% to base pay

    POST Advanced Certification : 8% to base pay

    Associate degree : 5% to base pay

    Bachelor degree : 7% to base pay

    Master degree : 9% increase to base pay
