What are the responsibilities and job description for the Federal Work Study - Peer Mentors/First Year Experience position at San Bernardino Community College District?
San Bernardino Community College District accepts applications for Federal Work Study, hourly positions for our two college campuses (San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College) on a continuous basis. However, this does not imply the department is actively recruiting for this position. If there is an interest and/or need within the specific department, applicants who meet the requirements will be contacted by the respective department manager. Applications submitted will remain active for up to one (1) year.
Student workers with assist the staff with the following
Student worker will assist in providing program related general support and assistance to faculty, staff, and students during class/lab activities. Must have the ability to work with a diverse student population.

Minimum Qualifications
Â
 Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting.
Â
 Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to occasionally lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 25 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

 Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.
Â
 Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
Student workers with assist the staff with the following

- Serve as an energetic and enthusiastic mentor to students in the Valley Bound Commitment and First Year Experience programs.
- Develop & maintain relationships with first-year students and provide assistance and support.
- Participate in training, programs and activities
- Attend individual and group meetings
- Serve as a positive role model
- Maintain regular contact with new students.
- Work both independently and as part of a team with fellow Peer Mentors and professional staff.
- Attend and participate in all training sessions and meetings.
- Serve as a positive academic and social role model.
- Educate new students about various resources and student services available at Valley College.
- Maintain confidentiality with any shared information.
- Discuss any mentee concerns with the Program Coordinator or Department Counselors.
- Participate in and complete all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Student must have in possession of a Federal Work Study award letter for the 2024/2025 academic year
- Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- Student cannot fall below half-time (6 units) during their employment under the FWS program.Â
- Â Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units
- Student must have a minimum of 2.0 GPA
- Student must have a current TB
- Ability to follow directions in order to carry out the duties as assigned
- Familiarity with various equipment/tools used in the program and/or have completed some courses in the specific program or related fields.

The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
- Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
- Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
- Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment
