The Department of Public Health (DPH), Animal Care Division is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our team. The Veterinary Assistant provides hands-on support during mobile visits, assisting DVMs (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) and RVTs (Registered Veterinary Technicians) with exams, treatments, and procedures. This position plays a key role in managing and maintaining accurate medical records, ensuring that patient care documentation is up to date. Effective communication with pet owners and adopters is essential, as the Veterinary Assistant will educate pet owners on preventative and post-operative care, medications, and necessary follow-up treatments as advised by the attending DVM or RVT. Additionally, this position will be responsible for administering medications, vaccines, and treatments both in the shelter and on the mobile unit. In certain situations, the Veterinary Assistant may also assist with or perform humane euthanasia under the direction of the DVM, RVT, or authorized superior. This role requires a compassionate individual with strong communication skills and a passion for animal welfare.

Duties may include but not limited to:
  • Animal handling, restraint, sample collection for laboratory submission.
  • Obtaining radiographs, vitals, charting, administering medications, performing grooming tasks, maintaining a clean environment for our patients.
  • Preparing surgical equipment, ensuring all instruments are sterilized, operating rooms are set up, all other necessary surgical supplies are prepared and available for use.
  • Assist in pre and post operation anesthesia, care of patients, monitoring vitals, providing heat sourcing, and clean up as needed.
  • Assist in the movement of patients and surgical flow. Be able to lift up to  50 pounds independently.
  • Following medical protocols established by the attending DVM.
  • Perform intake of animals into the shelter, including health screening, vaccine / deworming / flea prevention administration, and any other treatment or prescription as instructed by DVM or RVT.
  • Observe, monitor, and document all animals in the shelter for clinical signs of disease, illness, or injury.
  • Assist in inventory management restocking of supplies.
  • Other tasks as directed by DVM or RVT.

This position is extra-help, and incumbent does not attain status as regular County employee. Although this position is of limited duration and temporary in nature, assignments may be up to twelve (12) months. 


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.
Employment Status: This position is extra-help, and incumbent does not attain status as regular County employee. Although this position is of limited duration and temporary in nature, assignments may be up to twelve (12) months. This position will participate in the County's Deferred Compensation Plan and does not earn any other benefits.
Visa Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require Visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.
Certification: Must be willing to obtain a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit within three (3) months of hire.
Physical: Must be able to lift and restrain small to very large animals, both domestic and wild, which may weigh up to 100 pounds.  May climb, crawl or squat during field investigations and while providing assistance in the field to animal control officers.
Euthanasia: Must be able to perform euthanasia of sick, injured, or non-adopted impounded animals.  May be exposed to euthanasia and animal tranquilizer drugs.
Experience: One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience in a clinical veterinary hospital/clinic or high volume veterinary surgical facility/shelter.

Availability: Must be willing and available to work on weekends and holidays.
The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience working in a mobile veterinary clinic and another year in a high-volume spay/neuter environment. A strong passion for teamwork and delivering high-quality care to shelter and community animals in San Bernardino County is essential. The ideal candidate will be Fear Free certified, demonstrating a commitment to reducing stress and anxiety for animals in care. Additionally, they will possess the interpersonal skills needed to maintain positive relationships within the veterinary community.
