Overview Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, the school nurse conducts a health services program at all schools for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of students and school personnel in accordance with state law and district policies and procedures. Overview Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, the school nurse conducts a health services program at all schools for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of students and school personnel in accordance with state law and district policies and procedures. Responsibilities: Diagnosis of Children
- Conducts physical case findings, screenings and referral activities related to hearing, vision and dental impairment of children.
- Discusses with teachers the physical or health liabilities of children
- Ensures all staff are following individual health plans
- Shows awareness of the primary importance of children’s self-concept and emotional well being
- Services as a health education resource person to staff and children
- Supports school sites and parents in fulfilling the physical examination requirement for all first grade students
- Supports school sites and parents in fulfilling the state requirements for immunizations
- Conducts, or arranges for, vision screening in grades K, 3, and 6, and new and referred students; annual screening of students receiving special education services
- Conducts, or arranges for, hearing screening in grades K, 2, 5, and 8, and new and referred students; annual screening of students receiving special education services
- Conducts or arranges for scoliosis screenings for 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys
- Creates individual health plans for students with health concerns; revaluation and revision of health plans annually
- Coordinates the care of diabetic students at school through direct service and/or supervision and training of appropriate staff
- Trains staff in implementation of health plans; arranges for annual staff CPR and first aide training
- Provide assistance in emergency situations
- Provide consultation in cases of child abuse
- Make home visits as required
- Identify and follow-up on infectious diseases/conditions (e.g. head lice)
- Maintain and revise district’s pandemic plan
- Participate in IEP meetings and other meetings at school sites, county and state levels as appropriate
- Participate in the special education referral process as needed by conducting health assessments, writing reports, and attending IEP meetings
- Attend or hold parent conferences when needed; help parents interpret health results
- Coordinate drug/alcohol prevention education in all grades
- Communicates with parents regarding advise to seek medical care
- Supports school sites in notifying parents and teachers of exposures to some communicable diseases
- Confers with family doctors when indicated
- Assists in identifying safety and health hazards on school sites
- Oversees the maintenance of health record cards for each child
- Assists in improving student attendance when health issues are of concern
- Makes and distributes first aid kits to classrooms
- Manages medications and oversees staff for students who require administration at school
- Supports the implementation of measures adopted by the State Legislature, the State Board of Education, the District and legal requirements as stipulated in the Education Code
- Supports the District philosophy and implements District goals
- Maintains and improves professional competence of self and staff through participation in in-service education and providing in-service education for staff

Salary : $106,035 - $116,379
