Position Summary
The Collections Assistant supports the Collections Curator in the care, management, and documentation of the Museum’s collection. This role is responsible for handling, cataloging, and preserving artifacts, ensuring their long-term preservation and accessibility. The Collections Assistant works under limited supervision and is expected to exercise initiative and sound judgment while upholding the highest ethical standards in maintaining and protecting the Museum’s collection.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Coordinates the safe retrieval, handling, and storage of collection pieces
- Maintains and updates accurate records in the Museum’s computerized collections management system
- Assists with cataloging, inventorying, and condition reporting of objects
- Monitors and implements proper preservation practices for artifacts
- Supports acquisitions and loans, including documentation, research, and donor communications
- Provides information and research assistance related to the collection
- Performs other duties as assigned
Desired Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, or a related field
- Minimum of two years’ experience handling and caring for objects in a museum or historical/cultural institution
- Proven experience in collections management, documentation, and preservation practices
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience with and proficiency in PastPerfect or other collections management software
- Strong understanding of museum ethics, standards, and best practices in collections care
- Knowledge of proper artifact handling, storage, and preservation methods
- Excellent research, organizational, and record-keeping skills
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills
Working Conditions
Work may be performed in an office, museum, or field environment. Moderate physical activity is required, including the handling of objects up to 50 pounds and standing and/or walking for more than four hours per day. A criminal background clearance is required prior to a final offer of employment.
Compensation
$19-$21 per hour
