The San Diego Automotive Museum is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Automotive Museum Assistant Curator. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with a team of professionals dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of the automotive industry. The Assistant Curator will play a vital role in the curation, management, and presentation of the museum's collections, and exhibitions. The Assistant Curator reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer.
The Assistant Curator serves as a liaison between exhibitors, other cultural institutions, and the public. This role requires someone who is skilled in research and development, and who has expert knowledge of automobile history and culture. Resume and Cover Letter are required to apply.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collection Management
· Acquisition and Documentation: Assist in the acquisition of new artifacts and vehicles, ensuring proper documentation, cataloging, and preservation.
· Inventory Maintenance: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of the museum's collection, including condition reports and provenance information.
· Ensure the proper care, conservation, and security of the items.
Exhibition Development
· Exhibit Planning: Assist in the planning and development of creative, innovative, engaging and informative exhibitions.
· Installation and Deinstallation: Participate in the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, ensuring proper handling and display of artifacts and vehicles.
· Assist in the development of interpretive materials, including labels, panels, and multimedia content, to enhance visitor understanding and engagement.
· Present exhibit artifacts and vehicles in top quality.
· Conduct exhibit research and development.
· Assist with sourcing new vehicles for exhibitions.
· Keep abreast of the latest trends, developments, and best practices in the curatorial field.
· Organize loan contracts, extension letters, and exhibition proposal packets.
· Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience:
· Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Visual Communications, Fine Art, Transportation Design, Automotive Design, or related field.
· Preferred experience in a museum or visual arts setting.
· A keen eye for detail and creativity.
Have a passion for curating and eager to grow and learn museum management.
· Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills for working with staff, volunteers, and community members.
· Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
· Knowledge of and interest in automobiles, automobile history, and the automotive industry.
· Flexibility and adaptability to changing needs and situations.
· Proficient in using various software and tools for curatorial work, such as databases, cataloging systems, and design software.
· Attention to detail and quality.
· Maintain a high level of professionalism in manner and appearance.
· Preferred experience in a museum or visual arts setting.
WORK SCHEDULE
- 8 hour shift
- Evenings as needed
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
As part of the job requirements, the individual must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 lbs. Additionally, they should be able to bend and stoop regularly. The role also requires the individual to constantly sit for prolonged periods, up to 8 hours per day, and consistently sit at a desk and view a computer screen for up to two hours at a time or 7 hours per day. The individual must be able to speak into and use a telephone consistently for extended periods.
