Your role as Manager, Communications & Spanish Media Relations:       

You will be the primary contact for Spanish-language communications and media relations. You will serve as the primary Spanish translator for both players and Major League staff across different platforms, including but not limited to, translating interviews, press materials and scouting reports. You will work with the Communications team to coordinate press events, assist with media coverage, and serve as the Spanish-language point of contact for player agencies.

All the responsibilities we will trust you with:                                     

Serve as primary contact for Spanish-language media:

  • Field incoming Spanish media inquiries on various subjects including interview requests with players/staff/executives, media access, credentialing, parking, b-roll needs, etc.
  • Proactively pitch story ideas to Spanish media in conjunction with Padres PR department priorities and objectives

Serve as primary Spanish translator for players and Major League staff:

  • Translate interviews both pre- and post-game with players, including live televised interviews with TV and radio rights holders
  • Translate various press materials, including relevant press releases
  • Translate and/or create Spanish media advisories to solicit Spanish coverage at press conferences, community events, etc.
  • Translate scouting reports as needed for the coaching staff
    • This may include pitchers scouting reports on the first game of every series and individualized reports if needed by players upon request
  • Serve as liaison between Spanish-speaking players/staff and front office
    • Work with Director of Travel to disseminate pertinent information and resources to Spanish-language players
  • Travel on 50% of road trips (may include solo trips as primary media relations rep.)
    • Manage media expectations and interview requests in larger Latino markets including New York, Miami, Los Angeles and other popular road destinations
    • When serving as sole PR person on road trips, execute all regular PR duties including media prep with manager, facilitating interview requests with players, working with broadcasters and TV producers on daily requests, communicating with Baseball Operations on roster moves and injury updates, coordinating pertinent announcements with content/social team, disseminating pertinent information to media, etc.
  • In tandem with VP of Comms and Director of Media Relations, disseminate daily media timing via @PadresPR X account, text threads and other methods to ensure media is aware of clubhouse times, manager availability and other relevant timing
  • Work with Spanish broadcasters to disseminate pertinent information
    • Assist them with Spanish-specific requests such as radio interviews for pre/post-game shows
  • Properly vet and filter various Spanish media that cover the Padres both at home and on the road
    • Provide insight for credentials and ensure Spanish media are operating within the parameters of our media guidelines
  • Assist with the production of yearly Padres media guide as needed

Additional duties:

  • Work with VP of Comms and Sr. Manager of Business Comms to plan and coordinate press events with internal/external parties to ensure successful media coverage, including press conferences, community events, non-baseball events, unveils, new spaces at the ballpark, etc.
  • Work with MLB PR and Padres marketing department to secure press coverage of annual Hispanic Heritage Weekend initiatives
  • Assist content team with player asks for promo item shoots
  • Work with Fan Engagement team when needed to make Latin players aware of specific pregame ceremonies or specialty shoots
  • Act as a conduit between social/marketing/production teams and Spanish-language players/staff
  • Assist with reviewing and editing talking points for front office executives and members of senior leadership team for media availabilities
  • Assist Community Relations with promoting various events throughout the year
  • Assist Corporate Partnerships department with various announcements, commercial shoots, etc.
  • Serve as point of contact with player agencies, primarily for Spanish-language players

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most:                   

  • Proficient computer skills including experience with MS Office products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc., and general knowledge of basic office equipment including copier, laser printer, telephone, and computer
  • Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and effectively work well with others in a collaborative, respectful manner
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills with capacity to handle high volumes of detailed work, multi-task and manage projects on strict deadlines
  • Maintain professional demeanor with a high degree of discretion, integrity, and accountability
  • Maintain consistent, punctual, and reliable attendance

You will be required to meet the following:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment
  • 4-year Bachelor’s Degree, or education equivalent, preferably in Communications or closely related field
  • Must be fluently bilingual in English/Spanish
  • Minimum 3-4 years previous experience in sports Communications, specifically with Spanish Media Relations
  • Prior experience serving as translator for MLB team a plus
  • Must be able/willing to travel internationally, including frequent visits to Mexico, for various community events. Valid passport is required at time of hire
  • Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, Padres home and road games, special events, holidays and extended hours as needed
  • Minimum physical requirements: able to travel to and gain access to various areas of the ballpark for prolonged periods of time during games and events; able to lift and transport up to 25 pounds
  • As a condition of employment, you must successfully complete all post-offer, pre-employment requirements, including but not limited to a background check 

Salary and additional compensation:

Per the California pay transparency law, the base salary range for this full-time position is $70,000.00 to $76,000.00. As a candidate for this position, your salary and related elements of compensation will be contingent upon your work experience, education, job-related skills and any other factors the San Diego Padres considers relevant to the hiring decision for this position.
