Position Summary

San Diego State University is seeking a Collections Management Program Coordinator to support our NAGPRA / Collections Management Program Director. This role offers the opportunity to lead day-to-day operations, guide student workers, and contribute to meaningful NAGPRA-related activities in a professional curation facility.

Position Information

This is a part-time (.50 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date one year from start date, with the possibility of reappointment.

This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday and Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

Within the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Letters, the mission of the collections management program is to preserve and curate artifacts and their associated documents for academic research, public education, and use by Native Americans and others. Archaeological collections curated at SDSU represent a significant resource for research and education. Collections Management has an active research program with opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to undertake independent studies and internships. Opportunities to learn about local archaeology, artifact identification, exhibitions, curation, and federal and state regulations are abundant. The collections management program also has an active education outreach program where experienced graduate students bring artifacts to the classroom for an interactive hands-on experience.

The Department of Anthropology typically employs 8-10 graduate assistants, 1-2 undergraduate student assistants, and one or two interns who are assigned to collections management. This position will be responsible for day-to-day oversight of their work.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Key Qualifications

Ability to interpret and apply policies, regulations, and compliance requirements, including NAGPRA.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

Experience with research, data analysis, and basic statistical techniques for decision-making.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentation abilities.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, serving as a liaison within and outside the organization.

Knowledge of administrative practices, program operations, and organizational procedures as they relate to the curation practices is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $1,940 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $1,940 - $3,744 per month.
