This position requires the clearance to work out of Folsom State Prison.
The Institute for the Arts, Humanities, and Social Justice (IAHSJ) at San Diego State University is a collaboration of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts and the College of Arts and Letters. The IAHSJ is an interdisciplinary hub for research, creative projects, and community engagement at the intersection of the arts, humanities, and social justice. The Institute seeks to interrupt systemic injustices in access to the arts and education through cultivating dialogue and collaboration among faculty, students, and partners with a goal of building bridges across the university and community. PAC currently facilitates arts and leadership training programs in 15 state prisons throughout California. PAC is based at San Diego State University and has partnerships with California State University, Fullerton; Humboldt State University, and California State University, San Bernardino. SDSU-VISTA offers a two-year BA degree completion program at Centinela State Prison.
The PAC Teaching Artist, Sacramento, is responsible for the implementation of the Connecting Through Arts program at Folsom State Prison, and mentoring teaching assistants and peer facilitators, cultivating creative community within the local team and participants. Teaching Artists report to the Regional Lead and Executive Director and work closely with teaching and administrative staff.
Responsibilities
Teaching Artists are responsible for but not limited to :
Operations 95%
- Mentor and support PAC teaching assistants and peer facilitators
- Communicate with Sacramento Regional Lead and Executive Director
- Participate in monthly teacher meetings with PAC team and monthly meeting with Regional Lead
- Support events and exhibitions planned by the Regional Lead
- Collaborate with the teaching team, including peer facilitators, to ensure that classes have the appropriate supplies, delivered in a timely manner, and organized on site.
- Potential to also conduct site visits to area facilities where PAC has programming
- Facilitate the development of a new theater production with the class of participants in the prison, including support with developing a script, program / playbill.
