Role Summary:
Medical Assistant will perform procedures (see responsibilities) under the medical director’s oversight, ensure quality and efficient clinic service from patient intake to visit completion, and build the clinic’s administrative capacity to serve its intended population. This role will protect and steward the integrity and reputation of San Francisco Community Health Center and its mission.
Key Responsibilities:
- May occasionally cover front desk responsibilities, assisting with patient scheduling and determining patient eligibility and enrollment.
- Provides patients with a high level of clinical service, from visit preparation, visit assistance, and follow-up activities.
- Meets with clinicians (e.g., nursing, MA, NP and MD) for a daily morning huddle remotely or in person to review schedule and plan for the day.
- Is familiar with and adherent to the Clinic Policies and Procedures relevant to their tasks.
- Is responsible for advising the Clinic Manager and Chief Medical Officer of any change in status that would affect their ability to perform services.
- Prepares patients for medical examination – collecting vital signs and patient history and recording chief complaints for presentation to the provider.
- Maintains the confidentiality of patients and their families – always maintaining HIPAA compliance.
- Duties will also include sterilizing instruments, making appointments, assisting providers during procedures, patient education and entering patient information into the medical electronic records, venipuncture, vaccinations and other injections, and taking vital signs.
- Assists with insurance and other payer contracting.
- Submits and follows through on service authorizations from payers as needed.
- Oversees and implements billing.
- Ensures the clinic’s compliance with applicable health care quality requirements.
- Organizes meetings and work closely with other programs in the agency to ensure the clinic is highly integrated (e.g., IT, transgender services, HIV testing, etc.)
- Keeps track of meeting minutes, clinic tasks and responsibilities and ensure follow up by staff and volunteers.
- Process and aliquot blood and urine specimens
- Accurate and timely documentation in EMR (Electronic Medical Record) of all procedures performed in clinic
- Clean / sanitize exam rooms, maintain adequate stock of supplies in exam rooms and in the clinic
- Responsibilities as described in the Administrative Policies & Procedures for SFCHC, the MA Training and Competency Checklist, and in accordance with applicable state regulations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience as a medical assistant in a medical practice or clinic and/or certified in California as a Medical Assistant by a MA certification program and the California Department of Public Health.
- Experience performing phlebotomy, trouble-shooting difficult sticks, and medication injections.
- Proven ability to be highly organized and task-oriented consistently paying attention to details
- Experience in positions with demonstrated leadership qualities.
- Sensitivity to issues affecting LGBTQIA and communities of color (e.g., Asians, Pacific Islanders, Latinos/Latinas, African Americans, Native Americans).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to think analytically and creatively to solve day-to-day problems.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, email.
- Must obtain TB clearance (within past 12 months) and complete background check upon hire.
- Current with vaccinations including 2024 Covid-19 booster, Tdap, MMR, Hep C, and seasonal flu, and able to provide proof.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an FQHC or other type of Community Health Center.
- Bilingual in any language in addition to English
