Position Description:
The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is seeking Collaborative Pianists to serve as Full-Time Principal Vocal Coaches during the 2025-2026 academic year. Reporting to the Musical & Managing Director of Opera & Musical Theater, the incumbent will provide accompaniment to vocalists for lessons, rehearsals, performances, juries, competitions, opera ensembles and master classes. The incumbent also provides vocal coaching and accompanying to assigned students as needed.
Job Duties:
- As assigned by the Musical & Managing Director of Opera & Musical Theater, in coordination with faculty and students, provides accompaniment to vocalists for auditions, lessons, rehearsals, performances, juries, competitions, ensembles and master classes.
- Provides vocal coaching to assigned students.
- Commits to a minimum of 30 hours per week during the academic year, including Winter Term, and other periods leading up to and following each semester (i.e., student orientation, auditions, juries, etc.).
- Is expected to be generally available during normal teaching hours, defined as 10:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday, and available within reason during evenings and weekends for dress rehearsals, performances, master classes and other special events.
- Performs other relevant duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Has obtained a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in collaborative piano, accompanying, or piano performance.
- 2 years coaching singers in opera houses and/or opera young artist programs.
- Demonstrated the ability to play at sight, with accuracy and expressivity.
- Demonstrated experience providing accompaniment to vocalists, as well as the ability to coach vocal repertoire in a wide variety of styles, periods and languages, both art song and opera.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and perform new repertoire, sometimes on short notice.
- Ability to perform on stage regularly.
Compensation
This is a full-time position (minimum 35 hours/week) with medical, dental, vision, life/AD&D, and long-term disability insurance in addition to a 403(b) plan that currently offers a 5% match after two qualifying years of service. Salary range is $68,750-$71,000.
