Environmental Health Technician II (6110) – Department of Public Health

  • Application Opening : February 16, 2024
  • Application Deadline : The application filing will be open continuously at least through March 3, 2024 and will close any time thereafter.

Under general supervision, supervises Environmental Health Technicians in the investigation of complaints involving vector related and other general unsanitary conditions; enforces policies and implements methods to effectively control Health Code violations; issues notices and citations; recommends corrective action; explains sanitation and public health requirements related to code enforcement to the public, business community and government agencies; prepares various reports; and performs related duties as required.

  • Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates the work of Environmental Health Technicians in conducting investigations related to vector breeding sources and other general unsanitary conditions.
  • Conducts complex investigations, routine inspections, re-inspections to ensure ordered corrections have been made and responds to complaints involving vector related issues, hazardous materials, solid waste, and other general unsanitary conditions.
  • Enforces provisions of health and safety codes which create a health or safety hazard or constitute a public nuisance through issuing inspection reports, notices of violation and citations and recommending corrective action.
  • Explains and presents sanitation and / or hazardous materials and public health requirements related to code enforcement to the public, business community, and government agencies.
  • Places traps and poisons and obtains specimens for laboratory analysis and identification of insects.
  • Prepares and updates records, reports, and other documents.
  • Supports staff in identifying, referring and supporting with reinspection to ensure ordered corrections have been made related to unsanitary and unsafe conditions observed during investigation.
  • Works closely with, attends meetings with and may refer complaints and code violations to other applicable City and state agencies.
  • May appear as witness in court hearings when required.
  • Attends meetings and educational conferences related to vector control and hazardous materials / waste.
  • Evaluates documentation and / or reports submitted by businesses and property owners / managers for completeness.
  • Provides assistance in completing documentation forms and / or reports required for submission.
  • Assists in updating / revising standard operating procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries from residential property owners related to billing.
  • The Environmental Health Technician II performs other related duties as required.

    How to qualify

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Education : Completion of twenty-four (24) semester units from an accredited college or university in engineering, mathematics, physical, natural and / or biological sciences; AND
  • Experience : Eighteen (18) months of experience equivalent to the duties of an Environmental Technician I (6108).
  • Substitution : Two (2) additional years of experience as described above may be substituted for the required education.

    Special Conditions

  • Healthy Housing Program - Vector Control Technician certification issued by the CDPH.
  • Childhood Lead Program - California Lead-Related Construction (LRC) - Inspector / Assessor (I / A) Certificate issued by the CDPH.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

    Selection Procedures : Candidates will be required to complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following :

  • Candidates will be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application.
  • Candidates will be administered a test to determine their relative knowledge, skills and ability level for job-related areas as appropriate.
  • Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
  • Certification : The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of Ten Scores.

    The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

    All City and County of San Francisco employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
