Year 1: Non-Exempt-Focus on learning as a cohort and for the role.

Year 2: Exempt: Regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment. Majority of the Fellow's time is spent on tasks that require independent judgment and advanced knowledge, with limited routine tasks.

Position Summary

The mission of the Multicultural Fellowship Program is to equip emerging leaders with the experience, knowledge, and network to create an equitable Bay Area. For over 30 years, the Multicultural Fellowship has been a career accelerator to more than 100 alumni who are motivated and creative agents of change.

Successful candidates are early-career professionals who are new to philanthropy and of diverse cultural backgrounds who show promise and passion to create significant social change in the Bay Area. The Fellowship offers an unparalleled opportunity to work within the San Francisco Foundation and explore the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors in the Bay Area through a racial equity and economic inclusion framework. Each Fellow will embark on this journey with three other Fellows, Foundation staff, and an alumni community of support.

Boundaries

The Fellowship consists of four Fellows. Each Fellow works specifically within one of the Foundation’s teams: the People Pathway, Power Pathway, Place Pathway or Strategic Learning and Evaluation. Fellows can expect an individually nuanced, on-the-job learning experience while also being part of a cohort learning community.  

Authority

Multicultural Fellows work within their one program team to increase team capacity, provide a fresh perspective, and contribute to the efficacy of the team’s work towards advancing racial and economic equity in the five Bay Area counties that the Foundation serves.   

Role of the Strategic Learning and Evaluation Fellow

The Strategic Learning and Evaluation team reflects the Foundation’s commitment to deepen learning from our efforts and enhance our impact in in the San Francisco Bay Area. The team is responsible for leading internal learning efforts and assessing our external impact, while supporting strategy refinement to ensure that the Foundation is effective in achieving its goals towards racial equity and economic inclusion. To this end, the team is responsible for building the foundation’s evaluation and learning infrastructure, carrying out internal and external evaluations, and partnering with PolicyLink to manage and maintain the Bay Area Equity Atlas, a comprehensive data support system that tracks the state of equity across the region. The Strategic Learning and Evaluation team also fosters a culture of learning within the foundation--by assessing progress towards our 3-year impact plan, gathering and sharing information with internal and external stakeholders about impacts, arranging learning opportunities, and building a robust learning culture.  

A successful candidate for the Strategic Learning and Evaluation team will have applied experience with evaluation and learning methods, excellent data analysis experience using multiple tools such as Excel, and experience with meeting design and facilitation.

Tasks

With the direction and guidance of the Senior Director of Strategic Learning and Evaluation, the Strategic Learning and Evaluation Fellow will do the following:  

Evaluation and Learning: 

  • Support ongoing learning and evaluation activities across the foundation by partnering with SFF staff to generate reports, analyze data, prepare data visuals and memos, and share learnings in partnership with SLE staff.
  • Coordinate and facilitate internal and external meetings to review progress towards impact and share learnings.
  • Support internal and external evaluation projects by conducting data collection, analysis, and reporting. Coordinate and manage projects in partnership with SFF staff and external consultants.
  • Support and co-lead the development and coordination of ongoing organization-wide data collection of milestones, performance measures, staff and grantee surveys, and board memos.
  • Complete a capstone project that leverages the fellowship experience to address a strategic challenge faced by SFF or its grantee partners.

Collaboration: 

  • Partner with staff across the Foundation to identify learning opportunities for deeper impact. This may include planning, designing, and facilitating meetings about progress towards our 3-year impact plan, internal evaluation findings, and more.
  • Coordinate with the SLE team to support ad hoc projects related to internal learning.
  • Coordinate convenings and briefings to expand the reach of the Bay Area Equity Atlas.  

Grantmaking: 

  • The SLE fellow may be asked to participate in discreet and limited grantmaking opportunities such the Rapid Response Fund grantmaking process through outreach, evaluation, and recommendations for Rapid Response Fund grants.
  • Support organizational process that leverages restricted trust dollars to amplify our efforts to advance racial equity and economic inclusion.  

Competencies & Qualifications

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the Foundation’s programmatic areas of focus or a related discipline is preferred. 
  • Specialized training and/or courses in research and evaluation methods desired.

Experience:  

  • Minimum of two years and maximum of four years of relevant experience in applied research and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience applying mixed methods research methods, including but not limited to survey design and analysis, designing, and conducting focus groups and
  • interviews, conducting literature reviews, data analysis, and preparing reports for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects
  • Experience designing and facilitating meetings
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience applying a racial or economic equity frame in work environments is required 
  • Proven record of successfully working independently and collaboratively in teams
  • Understanding of Bay Area nonprofit and philanthropic communities is preferred

Technical Abilities And Skills

  • Intermediate to advanced computer/software skills, including Excel, Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, & Teams) Zoom, Miro.
  • Ability to learn, navigate and manage online platforms, including Fluxx, Qliksense, Smartsheet, and Salesforce.

Compensation: The San Francisco Foundation offers a very competitive total compensation package including base compensation in alignment with our organizational budget size and rich medical and fringe benefits offerings.

In their first year, Fellows will focus on learning and development and be paid hourly as non-exempt staff. In year two, the role takes on independent work and responsibilities and is moved to an exempt level role. The FY26 compensation budget for SFF has not been approved at this time. For reference, year one of a Fellow’s tenure in FY25 would pay, $44.27 per hour or $86,320 annually.
