Description

The Shelter Medicine Dental Technician administers anesthesia, obtains dental radiographs, and completes a COHAT and prophy, with extractions as needed, on shelter patients with DVM oversight and one assistant VA/RVT. This position is responsible for maintaining dental equipment and restocking the dental suite. Training and mentoring RVTs in dentistry techniques is preferred but not required. An active CA RVT license is required.

Core Responsibilities 

  • Verify the correct patient has been brought to the surgery suite and review records for updated weight, medications, and required procedures. 
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Medicine Surgeon to determine anesthesia protocols and peri-operative drug plans. 
  • Prepare and set up the dental suite, including anesthesia machines, dental equipment, x-ray machines, and procedure tables. 
  • Utilize Progeny software to request and perform full-mouth digital dental radiographs, ensuring timely review by the veterinarian. 
  • Assist in developing and executing treatment plans, including prophylaxis, extractions, and suturing as appropriate. 
  • Monitor and recover patients post-procedure based on staffing and surgical load. 
  • Accurately complete and maintain medical records in Salesforce and PetPoint, including scanning and attaching dental and anesthesia records. 
  • Ensure appropriate follow-up care, including updating patient status, scheduling post-op assessments, and documenting medications. 
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of dental and anesthesia equipment and coordinate ordering of new supplies as needed. 
  • Coordinate with other Shelter Medicine RVTs/VAs, SM DVMs, intake specialists, animal care associates, volunteer coordinators, MI and PH hospital staff, behavior specialists, adoption counselors, and volunteers to ensure that capacity for care is not exceeded, quality patient care is consistently provided, and length of stay (LOS) is minimized 
  • Work with intake specialists and adoptions flow team to maintain appropriate adoption driven capacity 

Requirements

  • Active CA RVT license is required 
  • A minimum of 1 year experience working in veterinary medicine, including both medicine and anesthesia/surgery 
  • Experience in high volume spay/neuter surgery a plus 
  • A minimum of 1 year experience working in an animal shelter strongly preferred. Other experience working in veterinary medicine, animal science, agriculture, public health, laboratory animal research or similar field will be considered on a case-by-case basis 
  • AA, AS or two years of post-secondary education preferred. 

Salary & Benefits 


The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $40-$42 per hour.
