With regular training from San Francisco Unified School District, Healthy Choices AmeriCorps members will gain the skills and knowledge needed to deliver top-notch volunteer service—whether working one-on-one with students, in small groups, or at the school-wide level. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Mentoring for Success
- Support school-based mentoring program alongside Mentor Program Site Coordinator
- Mentor students individually and/or co-facilitate group mentoring sessions
- Support the improvement of volunteer programs and strengthen school/community relationships by helping recruit and retain school volunteers
Positive School Culture
- Lead structured activities, clubs, and/or small groups during recess, lunchtime and in the after-school program to support student achievement
- Work with students and families to support pro-social behavior; participate in school-wide incentives programs
- Help lead school-wide activities such as monthly Health Education events, school assemblies, fairs, and educational events to help students make healthy choices
Collaborative Learning
- Attend regular supervision meetings and work cooperatively with school personnel such as School Social Worker, Counselor, Nurse and others
- Participate in weekly professional development trainings to gain foundational knowledge of topics such as: social skills/character development, understanding emotional injury, and coordination of school based mentoring programs
- Participate in local and school-based service events; help facilitate appreciation activities
- Develop a work plan in collaboration with school site supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS
- A passion for national and community service
- Commitment to youth development; Experience with children 5-17 preferred
- Experience with and/or desire to work with students, organizations, and communities
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility, adaptability, and positive attitude to learning
- Effective communication: writing and editing; comfortable speaking in front of groups
- Excellent organization skills; able to effectively manage time and meet competing demands; reliable; punctual
- Must be 18 years or older (no upper age limit)
- High School graduate or equivalent; BA/BS (Education, Social Work, Health) strongly preferred
- Complete background clearance, including National Service Criminal History Check
- You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S. to be an AmeriCorps Member
AMERICORPS SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
- Not a current SFUSD Employee
- Commit to a minimum of 1700 hours of documented service; full time during the school year
- Complete all required AmeriCorps documentation and data entry in a timely manner
- Complete 2 Individual Development Plans
- Complete service project activities in the community
- Attend trainings (not to exceed 20% of total service hours) and events to build skills and knowledge specific to school communities
- All services may need to be provided remotely in the event of an emergency that requires remote learning; Member duties are not prohibited or unallowable activities per AmeriCorps or Union rules
- Complete all professional development requirements as part of member agreement
