The school nurse conducts a professional health service program at one or more schools for the
evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of students and school personnel in accordance
with state law, district policies and regulations, and established procedures and performs other duties
as needed.
Responsibilities
- Conducts immunization programs and mandated school health screenings pursuant to California Education Code and Federal Laws.
- Identifies students with health problems that interfere with learning through medical case finding techniques, screening procedures, interviewing, observation, and record analysis.
- Provides health counseling for students, parents, and school personnel, and plans actions to address health issues affecting learning.
- Refers parents of students needing medical care or welfare assistance to appropriate private or community resources.
- Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
- Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member experiencing injury or emergency illness.
- Performs comprehensive health and developmental assessments for students considered for special education placement and follow-up assessments as needed.
- Interprets health and development assessments for parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals.
- Designs and implements individual student health maintenance plans as needed.
- Participates in developing and implementing a total school health program.
- Serves as a health consultant, resource person, and visiting classroom instructor to supplement the health education curriculum.
- Provides recommendations regarding modifications to educational programs for students with specific health needs.
- Prepares and submits reports as requested to the Director II – Student Support Services and/or the Lead School Nurse.
- Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with California Education Code and SGUSD Board policy regarding infectious and contagious diseases.
- Assists in identifying safety and health hazards on school sites and recommends necessary changes.
- Is knowledgeable in first aid, safety control methods, and State, County, and City health laws and regulations.
- Provides First Aid and CPR/AED training to staff.
- Coordinates with school health aides to ensure appropriate school health care.
- Adheres to the Code of Ethics of the Nurse Practice Act.
- Conducts home visits when appropriate.
- Assumes other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Licensed Registered Nurse
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
- Possession of, or in the process of obtaining, a valid California Health Services Credential authorizing appropriate service by the State of California
- Possession of a School Audiometrist Certificate as required by the State of California
- First Aid/CPR AED Instructor Certificate (preferred)
- Fluency in a second language (preferred)
Salary : $60,474 - $108,318
