Position Overview

The San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership (SGVEP) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Public Policy to lead its advocacy efforts, foster relationships with key stakeholders, and drive initiatives that enhance the economic vitality of the region. This individual will serve as a strategic advisor on public policy issues, representing the Partnership’s interests at local, state, and federal levels while championing policies that benefit the business community and broader economy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Policy Analysis and Advocacy:
  • Monitor and analyze local, state, and federal legislation and regulations impacting the San Gabriel Valley.
  • Develop and advocate for public policy positions aligned with the Partnership’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Draft policy briefs, position statements, and public comment letters.
  • Organize and participate in the annual Sacramento advocacy trip.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with elected officials, government agencies, community organizations, and business leaders.
  • Represent SGVEP at public hearings, legislative meetings, and industry conferences.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Partnership and government entities.
  • Organize and execute monthly meetings of the Legislative Action Committee by working with the chairs of the committee to identify speakers, bills and regulations for inclusion on the agenda.
  • Strategic Leadership:
  • Collaborate with SGVEP leadership to shape and execute a comprehensive public policy agenda.
  • Provide guidance to the Board of Directors and committees on legislative priorities and advocacy strategies.
  • Lead efforts to secure public and private funding to support policy initiatives.
  • Public Relations and Communication:
  • Communicate the organization’s policy positions effectively through social media, newsletters and public speaking engagements.
  • Oversee the development of policy reports, newsletters, and advocacy campaigns.
  • Collaboration with Businesses and Community Partners:
  • Organize annual Legislative Networking Reception and other events to engage elected officials or their staff.
  • Partner with businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations to promote economic growth and regional development.
  • Other Duties:
  • Assist with the organization of other Partnership events.
  • Assist in seeking sponsorships for key Partnership events.
  • Meet with prospective members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field (Preferred).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in public policy, government relations, or advocacy, preferably in an economic development or business association setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislative processes at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Strong analytical, research, and communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex policy issues into actionable recommendations.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience managing advocacy campaigns and coordinating grassroots efforts.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of the San Gabriel Valley region, its economic landscape, and key industries.
  • Bilingual skills (English and a commonly spoken language in the region, such as Mandarin or Spanish) are a plus.
  • Proficiency in digital advocacy tools and platforms.

Schedule and Compensation

Salary up to $85,000 per year plus an attractive benefits package that includes: employer paid medical, dental and vision insurance, Simple IRA plan with a 3% employer match in contributions, 4 and 1/2 day work week (half day on Fridays), 2 weeks paid vacation, 48 hours personal leave, 80 hours sick leave, and 10 paid holidays annually. May need to work some evenings and weekends.
