Description

Ensures the stable operation of the computer networks in the District. This includes assisting in planning, developing, installing, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. The incumbent will also analyze and resolve end-user hardware and software computer problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end-user training where required.
Incumbents in this position work independently and consult with upper-level staff and management when necessary. The Network Administrator I performs a variety of high-level complex technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. May also serve as a lead for lower-level technical staff.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level class in the Information Technology Network Administration Group. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Information Technology Support series by the level of responsibility assumed, the complexity of duties assigned and by the scope and impact on District Information Security, network and technical operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives limited supervision from an assigned supervisor.

May oversee student workers and lower-level staff.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Assists Network Administrator II and Senior Network Administrator to research network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts.
  2. Provides first-level technical support to District users concerning network system operations.
  3. Diagnoses problems with network equipment and performs equipment repair or upgrades when appropriate.
  4. Assists in the maintenance of VOIP phone systems and computer stations.
  5. Assists Network Administrator II and Senior Network Administrator to install, configure, and maintain multi-user software accessed from file servers.
  6. Installs, configures and maintains network cabling and other networking equipment such as hubs, switches, and UPS in accordance with industry standards.
  7. Oversees installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network connected end-user hardware, software, and peripheral devices.
  8. Maintains current District's security solutions, including firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems.
  9. Works in close cooperation with Network Administrator II and Senior Network Administrator and Information Technology Management to facilitate management of computer labs, installing any software needed for each semester and/or special seminars.
  10. Places orders for software, hardware, and other supplies as required for the institutional computer network, personal computers, and computer labs; consults with vendors, contractors and manufacturers regarding equipment specifications and makes recommendations to management.
  11. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  12. Works with District personnel for project implementation and network hardware deployments; facilitates meetings with vendors and consultants to discuss or clarify hardware/software requirements.
  13. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Operational knowledge of network and routing protocols.
  • Operational knowledge of voice over IP phone systems.
  • Operational knowledge of switch configuration and programming.
  • Methods and techniques of providing user support for network and telecom operations and equipment.
  • Familiarity with a variety of networking and personal computer software.
Ability to:
  • Work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Provide Technical assistance across the campus regarding network system operations.
  • Ability to install software and hardware on networking equipment and microcomputers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on servers, computers, and peripheral equipment.
  • Ability to communicate information to faculty, students, staff, and the public in a clear and concise manner.
  • Actively listen: giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively with management, peers, and customers, via email, phone and in face-to-face situations (written and verbal).
  • Stay abreast of technology changes, standards and the District's operating environment changes.
  • Exercise independent judgment while maintaining District standards and guidelines.
  • Prepare clear and concise documentation
  • Work in a fast paced, high demand environment.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Sit, stand, walk, bend and stoop for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of a computer keyboard; may be required to lift up to 30 pounds

Education and Experience Requirements

Education:

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science, information systems, electronics or a related field.

Experience:

Three (3) years of increasingly responsible related experience.
