Job Summary

Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) fosters student opportunity in a revolutionary way by preparing students to maintain lifelong health and well-being. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) leads operations of laboratory testing to facilitate laboratory diagnostic services to support the care of Student Wellness Center patients. Under the general supervision of the Clinic Manager with support from a consulting laboratory physician, this position provides services in line with licensure from the California Department of Public Health to collect, test, and process specimens in support of the Student Wellness Center’s operations. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is the primary lab scientist completing these items and oversees daily technical operations within the laboratory, including lead work direction to support staff in the laboratory. Working collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose and mission of this and all SWC positions.

Key Responsibilities

Apply specialized training and clinical laboratory skills to serve patients of the Student Wellness Center through in-house laboratory services

Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results

Review lab order(s) and direct patients through specimen collection procedures

When required, draw blood samples by skin punctures and venipuncture, for clinical analysis and testing

Process and label incoming and out-going specimens, including paperwork for outside labs

Maintain records, which demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens

Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance

Sterilize equipment, maintain supplies and instruments, and adhere to all safety guidelines, including daily infection control responsibilities

Cooperatively participate and represent the laboratory in staff meetings, SWC committees, and in-service training, and health education projects

Participate in Division and campus events, meetings, and projects as requested

Serve as the laboratory representative for AAAHC accreditation, state licensure, and other required certification and audits

Propose and support the preparation of studies, records and reports in support of SWC quality control efforts

Assist with data gathering for in-house studies and audits

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical laboratory work and the use and care of laboratory equipment

Thorough knowledge of methods and procedures involved in phlebotomy, including aseptic technique

Knowledge of the preparation, mounting, and staining of specimens, laboratory tests, and clinical laboratory quality control procedures and standards

Working knowledge of software applications used at the Student Wellness Center, including electronic health record system or the ability to quickly navigate new electronic health record systems

Knowledge of laboratory safety fundamentals and OSHA Laboratory Standards

Ability to identify incongruities in test procedure and inconsistencies in reports of test results for patients

Ability to demonstrate skill in the performance of a variety of laboratory analyses and to evaluate information against measurable criteria

Ability to serve as a resource for a variety of established and standardized laboratory procedures

Ability to keep records and prepare various administrative and laboratory analysis reports

Ability to handle multiple tasks, organize work priorities and special projects, with the willingness to adjust and be flexible as required

Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies

Effective communication across a variety of venues

Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a diverse multicultural environment

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities

Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license

Two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative and technical work within a clinical laboratory

Preferred Qualifications

At least one (1) year of experience leading or managing a clinical laboratory

Experience supporting accreditation and other regulatory standards and site visits

Classification : Clinical Laboratory Scientist II

Anticipated Hiring Range : $8,200 / month - $8,500 / month

CSU Salary Range : $5,549 / month - $10,711 / month
