What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Food Service Deckhand position at San Juan Cruises?
Come work on the water this season!
Currently we are looking for four crew for a full time food service/customer service deckhand job starting in April and then a second round that will start in June.
We are hiring a Deckhand / Food Service staff to work with San Juan Cruises at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven. People hired will work on our vessels which run a variety of cruises in Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands and also La Connor. We operate whale watching tours, trips to Friday Harbor, Cracked Crab dinner cruises, Beer and Wine tasting cruises and more! Duties include food service/bar service, table service, cleaning vessels and bathrooms, maintenance, following recipes and cooking meals as well as prep cook work, dishwashing, line handling/general deckhand operations, interacting with passengers and more. Must be able to work weekdays and weekends throughout the summer. This is a seasonal position and we are hoping to get people with open availability.
Nearly all of our cruises include food and beverage service, so customer service and/or restaurant experience is a huge plus. Experience on boats and knowledge of local history and local wildlife is also great, but not required.
- This position will include bar service, so this is a 21 position and you should be comfortable serving alcohol.
- Because we are operating a vessel on the ocean this position is regulated by the US Coast Guard so passing a drug test is mandatory to work here, within the grace period as well as being a part of potential random tests if called on by the USCG.
- These are long days of work, though we keep people to around 40 hours per week. However the nature of the job means that some days of work can be upwards of 13 hours per day. Because of this, full availability is preferred because each week of work will look different than the last.
- Scheduling is done 3-4 weeks in advance, so you should know what you are doing each day of the week far enough out to plan around it.
Employment:
- Roughly April 5th - September 30th.
Benefits:
- Tips! These are split amongst the captain and crew on each vessel at the end of the day. Everything is pooled and split completely even.
- Free meals. As we serve our meals to passengers in a buffet style. All trips that have meals on them, which is most, will also feed the crew. This will be multiple trips per day in many occasions, so free meals/snacks and beverages are available whenever these meals are cooked.
- 40% Employee discount to our gift shop, Salish Trading Post, in the Cruise Terminal
- 15 % Employee discount to our sister company Port Fairhaven Fish & Chips
- A very good Friends and Family discount for many of our cruises. And free cruises for employees and significant others to ride as well.
