JOB TITLE: Classroom Teacher/Coach WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal and Athletic Director DATE REVISED: February 2025

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide instruction and coach students to develop the skill and ability to excel in the sport assigned. Responsible for contributing to the educational program as a whole and to the growth of each student.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Full-time employee of SMCISD
Bachelor’s Degree and Valid Texas Teaching Certificate preferred
Certified or ability to certify for Class B Commercial Driver’s License (within 90 days of employment date) and TEA bus driving certification
ESL Certification is required within twelve months of employment for K-5 General Education, 6-12 English Language Arts Reading (ELAR), and Special Education (SPED) ACL Teachers.

Special Knowledge/Skills:
General knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures
Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules
Effective communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Minimum Experience:
Four years experience as a coach or participant in the sport assigned preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.

2. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student athlete group and sport involved.

3. Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions that promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.

4. Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities, both in the classroom and athletic facilities.

5. Keep informed of and ensures compliance with all UIL rules.

6. Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.

7. Work with athletic director in scheduling competitions and coordinating arrangements (head coach only).

8. Cooperate with other members of the school staff in planning and implementing instructional goals and objectives for the overall educational development of student athletes.

9. Assist in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.

10. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

11. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and the local Board policy in the area of athletics.

12. Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.

13. Regular attendance; must be willing and able to report to work at designated site on a regular daily basis according to established work schedule.

14. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.

15. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.

16. Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.

17. Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.

18. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the coaching program and implement changes based on the findings. (Head coach only)

19. Travel with student athletes and supervise the team during athletic competitions in assigned sports.

20. Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices. (Head coach only)

21. Maintain proper and appropriate discipline among students during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property.
22. Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.

23. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with student athletes and their parents.

24. Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.

25. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

26. Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of athletics to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.

27. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.

28. Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.

29. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor(s)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the supervision of assigned coaches and student athletic assistants (head coach only)

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands:
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to instruct; maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Frequent district and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor exposure to elements including sun and heat; frequent bus driving; subject to bus driving certification requirements including random alcohol and drug testing.
