The Position :

The Dean of Mathematics and Science reports directly to the Vice President of Instruction for the administration of the division, including the disciplines of Architecture, Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Dental Assisting, Engineering, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Nursing, Physical Sciences, Physics, as well as the Planetarium, Math Resource Center, Integrated Science Center, and MESA.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide leadership, management, and development for the division's day, evening, and weekend programs in the academic year and in the summer
  • Oversee hiring of faculty and classified professionals for the division; recommend personnel actions to the appropriate Vice President; supervise and evaluate faculty and classified professionals in accordance with collective bargaining agreements
  • Regularly evaluate course offerings and modalities to ensure that the course schedule is meeting student needs
  • Organize and supervise the operation of the division office and academic spaces
  • Participate actively and cooperatively with other administrators to support Academic and Career Communities and college / district initiatives
  • Support and actively engage in program advisory committees, dual-enrollment initiatives, CSM Coastside programming, and other college priorities
  • In collaboration with faculty, identify program needs and encourage the development of curriculum; support a variety of methods and modalities of instruction, including culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy, Zero-Textbook-Cost (ZTC) and Open Educational Resources (OER) adoptions, computer-assisted instruction, and distance learning
  • Develop and administer the division budget and oversee grant budgets
  • Facilitate grant applications for the division, manage new and existing grants, guide assessment activities, and ensure compliance and reporting timelines are met
  • Serve as a member of the Instructional Administrators Council
  • Work with students, faculty, and staff to constructively resolve problems and conflicts
  • Serve as liaison with other college divisions, district teams, advisory committees, student groups, and appropriate off-campus groups
  • Engage in the advancement of the college's anti-racist work and support efforts to embed that work throughout all college activities
  • Implement district rules and regulations, California Education Code, Title 5, and collective bargaining agreements as required
  • Organize and lead the annual division planning and budgeting process in alignment with college goals; provide leadership for departmental program reviews and student learning outcomes assessment; support the collective preparatory work of accreditation
  • Provide leadership in staff and faculty professional development, including division meetings and retreats
  • Serve as key emergency prevention, preparedness, and response personnel as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Possession of a Master's or above from an accredited institution OR the equivalent
  • One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Successful teaching experience in an accredited institution of higher education
  • Evidence of ability to provide leadership for all aspects of the division
  • Ability to develop, organize, and coordinate diverse instructional programs to achieve college and division goals
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with district and college administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Commitment to programs that encourage pre-collegiate students to pursue education in science, mathematics, and technology
  • Benefits :
