The Position:

The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Nursing. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.


The anticipated start date for this position is Fall 2025.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s)of any particular position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.

  1. Nursing instructors provide didactic, skill lab, open lab, and clinical instruction in acute, long-term, and community care settings
  2. Report to the course manager or director as needed
  3. Manage the pediatric nursing course
  4. Collaborate with faculty and staff for the betterment of the program
  5. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
  6. Participate in nursing team, department, and division meetings
  7. Assist in curriculum development and revision
  8. Practice continuing professional development
  9. Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge regarding best practices
  10. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s or above in nursing OR Bachelor’s in nursing AND Master’s or above in health education or health science OR the equivalent (see below) OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher
  • A current California Registered Nursing license
  • A current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider certification
  • At least one year’s continuous experience, within the previous five years as a registered nurse providing direct patient care (Clinical teaching applies toward direct patient care)
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Recent clinical experience in acute care pediatric nursing/medical surgical nursing
  2. Willingness to update skills if needed
  3. Ability to teach in clinical areas as assigned
  4. This position may require evening or weekend assignments
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of successful clinical teaching techniques
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of current nursing issues and trends. Be willing to actively participate and contribute to changes in the nursing program at department and team meetings
  7. A commitment to staying abreast of new trends in nursing and the clinical setting
  8. A commitment to supporting gender-diverse and ethnically diverse students enrolled in nursing
  9. The ability to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress in the clinical setting
  10. The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their learning and encourage them to learn problem-solving skills
  11. The ability to adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students
  12. The ability to assist students in the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge and skills in the clinical setting
  13. A willingness to work with both faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality at department, division, college, and district levels
  14. The ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one’s pedagogy and modify techniques to engage students
  15. A familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of computer-based technology appropriate to the field of nursing
  16. A commitment to the SMCCCD goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum
  17. A commitment to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with teaching-related technology (i.e., learning management systems)
  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
  • Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
  • Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in nursing
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within nursing courses and classrooms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution designations for institutional, departmental and instructional practices

Foreign Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs in order for it to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated by a U.S.-based credentials evaluation service. The District currently accepts evaluations from agencies approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing

Please note that the California Education Code requires, in part, that community college districts shall not employ or retain in employment persons in public school service who have been convicted of certain felonies, a misdemeanor drug charge (including alcohol offenses) or misdemeanor moral turpitude (sexual offense) crime. However, consideration may be given to those whose drug convictions occurred more than five years ago. A conviction for other crimes may not necessarily disqualify you from the job for which you may be applying.
