POSITION SUMMARY
The Full-time, non-exempt Data Collector is responsible for gathering, collecting, and analyzing data relating to residential, commercial, agricultural, and oil and gas properties, as well as vacant land. The Data Collector is also responsible for assisting with property valuations for assessment purposes, including, but not limited to, the classification of property, field inspections, and valuation of agricultural land and improvements. This position provides the employee with the opportunity and training required to acquire a Colorado Ad Valorem Appraisers License.
The position will report directly to the County Assessor and Appraisal Supervisor and be compensated at a Grade 25, Step 3-6 ($26.89 – $28.96) per hour.As a full-time position, the Data Collector is eligible for all County-sponsored insurance and benefit plans as summarized in SMC 2025 Summary of Benefits link subject to applicable waiting periods.
The position will be primarily based out of the County’s Miramonte Building in Telluride, Colorado, and will frequently travel throughout San Miguel County for field visits and site inspections.
Supervision Received: Receives direct supervision from the County Assessor and Appraisal Supervisor.
Supervision Exercised: This position possesses no supervisory responsibilities.
JOB DESCRIPTION

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists in the performance of various routine field audits of construction and sales verification to gather data for assessment purposes.
- Verifies and updates property characteristics, processes computer-generated appraisal forms, and inputs collected data into a Computer Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) system.
- Conducts visual inspections of building sites to ascertain and verify stages of completion or development; notes quality and type of materials utilized; ascertains the use of land.
- Performs field inspections on property to obtain and verify information for appraisal records.
- Checks maps, legal descriptions, and building permits in the CAMA system; and performs periodic updates to reflect additions, completions, and/or site use and changes.
- Performs various appraisal functions, including reviewing Assessor records for completeness and accuracy; posting appraisal information, compiling property information and tabulating data, and performing mathematical computations to verify accuracy and completeness.
- Performs mathematical computations including computing simple fees and taxes, and/or determining square footage, calculating percentages, fractions, or decimals utilizing standard formulas and readily available data.
- Updates and maintains assessment data within the CAMA System; gleans data from confidential forms filled out by property purchasers.
- Follows oral and written instructions.
- Travels throughout Colorado for training and classes on occasion. Frequently travels throughout San Miguel County for field visits and site inspections.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

- Basic geometry, mathematics and measurements skills, including fractions, percentages and square footage.
- Knowledge of data entry and retrieval operations for computer systems.
- Knowledge of office methods/procedures, spelling, punctuation, and grammar as well as coordinate geometry.
- Ability to make decisions in accordance with rules, regulations, laws, and procedures.
- Knowledge of building techniques, workmanship and materials. Knowledge of construction materials, and interpretation of architectural drawings.

- Ability to speak more than one language, including Spanish, is preferred but not required.
DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- A high-school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree in business administration, general business, finance, accounting, public administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Two (2) or more years of experience in the construction, appraisal, or a related field is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of the position.
- Experience working within the public sector, especially local government, and within a County Assessor’s office is strongly preferred.
REQUIRED LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
- Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- As part of your duties as a county employee, you may be called upon to perform duties outside your day-to-day activities in order to support county emergency operations. All county employees are required to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within the first 6 months of employment.
- Must be able to satisfactorily pass a comprehensive, pre-employment criminal background and motor vehicle check.

The employee is required to stand, walk, climb or balance, twist, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Must be able to respond to the customers’ needs and perform tasks requiring extensive hand and eye coordination. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Physical ability and mobility to drive a motor vehicle to and from meetings and traverse uneven and rugged terrain as required. Ability to work extended shifts and attend training and meetings outside of regularly scheduled hours and the ability to work in stressful situations.

This position requires work to be performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Work will be performed in both an office and field setting, including at field sites throughout San Miguel County that may periodically have unpredictable requirements or demands and require navigating uneven terrain. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Ability to tolerate and be productive in a quiet to moderate noise level in the workplace. Work environments may include at times working and operating a vehicle in severe weather conditions, especially during the winter season.
