Veterinarian
Job Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated veterinarian with experience in exotic and farm animal care to join our team and oversee the health and well-being of our diverse animal residents. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal welfare, a strong understanding of veterinary medicine, and a commitment to humane education.
We are a small micro-sanctuary (2 acres) that is part of an expanding humane educational program. We are currently in the process of developing a 7-acre sanctuary located in Tarpon Springs, FL, just down the street.
Our sanctuary provides lifelong care for a wide variety of animals, including farm animals, exotics, and small primates.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive veterinary care, including preventive medicine, diagnostics, treatment, and emergency care.
- Conduct routine health checks, vaccinations, and medical evaluations for a variety of species.
- Assist with animal handling, transportation, and medical procedures as needed.
- Develop and implement nutrition, enrichment, and wellness plans tailored to individual animal needs.
- Monitor animal health and behavior, identifying and addressing concerns promptly.
- Perform basic and advanced veterinary procedures, including wound care, minor surgeries, and laboratory diagnostics.
- Oversee medical records, ensuring compliance with regulatory and best practice standards.
- Educate staff, interns, and volunteers on proper animal care, medical protocols, and humane handling techniques.
- Mentor and oversee high school students interested in careers with animals as they shadow and assist in daily animal care.
- Collaborate with sanctuary leadership to develop long-term healthcare plans and emergency response strategies.
- Support our humane education mission by participating in educational programs and community outreach.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Licensed to practice in Florida (or ability to obtain licensure).
- Extensive experience with farm animals, exotics, and/or wildlife (sanctuary, zoo, or wildlife rehabilitation experience preferred).
- Strong proficiency in diagnosing and treating a variety of species, including knowledge of species-specific care requirements.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and on-call availability for emergencies.
- Physical stamina to handle the demands of the role, including lifting animals and working in varying weather conditions.
- Compassionate and patient approach to working with animals, staff, and volunteers.
- Must be 100% reliable with no lateness or reliability concerns.
- Must not be sensitive to body fluids, smells, or loud noises—thanks, animals!
- Must be comfortable working outdoors in heat, rain, or cold as needed.
- Must have reliable transportation and verifiable references.
- No smoking, drugs, or felonies.
- Willingness to comply with required vaccinations.
Schedule & Flexibility:
- Position days and hours are flexible to accommodate both the needs of the sanctuary and the veterinarian’s availability.
