Job Summary
Sanders Repair Services is looking for a Trailer Technician to perform inspections, maintenance, and repairs on liquid transportation trailers. This role requires mechanical expertise, knowledge of DOT compliance, and hands-on experience in diagnosing and repairing liquid transport trailer components. Candidates must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and high-quality service.
This position it open to both full-time (40 hours weekly) and part-time (20-29 hours weekly) applicants. Applicants that are currently enrolled in a secondary education or training program are asked to provide a copy of their course schedule for HR to aid in determining availability.
Essential Job Functions
Inspection & Preventative Maintenance:
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure structural integrity, cleanliness, and proper function of liquid transportation trailers.
- Inspect and maintain mechanical, electrical, suspension, and air brake systems to meet DOT compliance and company safety standards.
- Perform preventative maintenance, including brake adjustments, tire changes, wheel-end servicing, lighting system repairs, and fluid checks.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, ensuring proper function of components such as air brakes, ABS modules, wiring harnesses, and tank attachments.
- Maintain accurate service records, including maintenance logs, inspections, and work order documentation.
Repair & Troubleshooting:
- Perform repairs on:
- Air brake and hydraulic brake systems
- Suspension components (airbags, leaf springs, shocks, torque arms, bushings, etc.)
- Trailer lighting and electrical systems (wiring harnesses, connectors, and sensors)
- Landing gear, axles, and kingpin assemblies
- Tank wash and sanitation systems (for food-grade trailers)
- Other trailer components as needed (those not previously listed)
- Use diagnostic tools and equipment to pinpoint mechanical failures and ensure efficient repairs.
- Assist with structural repairs, including welding tank trailer frames when necessary.
- Properly label, store, and dispose of salvage parts and hazardous materials in compliance with safety regulations.
Shop & Roadside Service Support:
- Provide on-site and emergency roadside repair services for liquid transportation trailers within the designated service region (service truck technicians and on-call technicians only)
- Keep shop tools, equipment, and inventory in proper working order.
- Maintain an accurate record of materials and replacement parts, tracking usage to prevent shortages.
- Assist senior technicians with complex trailer modifications and component installations.
Safety & Compliance:
- Comply with all DOT, OSHA, and company safety protocols, ensuring proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and hazardous material handling.
- Follow sanitation and environmental regulations related to food-grade tank trailers and chemical tankers.
- Attend departmental safety meetings, ongoing training programs, and technical workshops to enhance skills and remain updated on industry standards.
- Report safety concerns, hazards, and incidents immediately to supervisors.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Basic understanding of liquid transport trailer components and mechanical systems.
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy tools and equipment (up to 60 lbs.).
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and precision in repairs.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules to include some nights and weekends for on-call hours (hourly plus pay differential)
- Ability to read and interpret engineering diagrams, wiring schematics, and service manuals.
- Strong writing skills to complete service records, reports, and work orders accurately.
Preferred:
- 2 years of experience in trailer maintenance and repair or in a similar field
- Proficiency in welding, fabrication, and structural repair for liquid transport trailers.
- Brake system certification or experience with ABS diagnostics.
- Knowledge of pump, valve, and metering system repairs for liquid trailers.
- Previous experience working with food-grade or chemical tank trailers.
- Proficiency in Outlook and service writing software.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and climb ladders for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to handle tools, fasten small parts, and manipulate electrical wiring.
- Steady hands and coordination for precise mechanical work.
- Strong visual acuity and color recognition for working with electrical systems and diagnosing issues.
- Hearing ability to differentiate mechanical sounds and detect unusual noises in trailer components.
- Ability to work in various environments, including hot, cold, wet, and noisy conditions.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a shop, industrial yard, and outdoor settings.
- Exposure to various weather conditions, dust, grease, chemicals, and loud equipment.
- Required to follow strict safety protocols when working with hazardous materials, heavy machinery, and electrical systems.
- Collaboration with technicians, coordinators, and managers to ensure efficient workflow.
