OVERALL JOB PURPOSE

Directors at Sandia Area are responsible for upholding the organization’s mission, vision, and values within their departments.  They ensure that departmental goals align with company-wide objectives, modeling and enforcing organizational values while fostering collaboration and accountability across their teams.

 

Reporting directly to the Controller/VP Accounting the Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing all operational aspects of financial and regulatory reporting and works closely with the internal and external independent auditors and Credit Union Management.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Team Management 

  • Lead by example, reinforce, and consistently uphold Sandia Area’s Values: Service, Sustainability, Efficiency, Trust, Growth, and Stewardship.  

  • Collaborate with Sr. Leadership to develop and implement procedures to continuously improve the accuracy and efficiency of the financial and regulatory reporting.   

  • Responsible for overseeing the department's staffing needs, including interviewing, hiring, training, and performance evaluations.  

  • Assist Controller with defining, documenting, implementing and training policies and procedures as well as identifying efficiencies and process improvement.

  • Lead and manage staff with the goal of enhancing professional development and personal growth while achieving department goals. 

 

Financial and Regulatory Reporting

  • Oversees and is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of the following:

  • Monthly Financial Statements for Credit Union Management

  • Monthly Board Reports as assigned to the Accounting Department

  • Quarterly NCUA 5300 Call Report

  • Annual Escheatment Report

  • Federal Tax Reporting such as forms 1098, 1099, 945, and 5498

  • Other reporting as assigned

  • Assists with Budget preparation

 

Controls and General Ledger Maintenance

  • Maintains accounting controls by overseeing asset, liability, and capital account entries, new and matured investments, depreciation and prepaid schedules, and financial institution accounts. 

  • Confirms daily, weekly, and monthly reconcilements of General Ledger and subsidiary reports are complete, differences are researched, and correcting entries are posted.

  • Oversees and reviews month-end closing activities. 

  • Reviews and approves accounts payable.

  • Responsible for departmental compliance with Bank Secrecy Act and Office of Foreign Assets Control requirements. Performs duties related to the role of OFAC point of contact. 

  • Maintains working knowledge of accounting software used by the Credit Union. 

  • Serves as back up to Accounting Staff as needed.

  • Represents the credit union in a professional manner at all times 

  • Maintains a thorough understanding and adherence to credit union regulations, compliance, policies, procedures, and guidelines. 

  • Meets deadlines as assigned and directed. 

  • Maintains a positive and caring atmosphere for members and employees consistent with the credit union’s mission and philosophy. 

  • Maintains the security and confidentiality of pertinent information and records. 

  • Willing to undergo a background and credit check as required by regulations 

  • Understands and agrees to abide by the policies and procedures established by Sandia Area Federal Credit Union and federal and state legal and regulatory guidelines, including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), as applicable to this position. 

  • Perform additional duties as assigned or directed by leadership.

 

Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs) 

  • In-depth understanding of GAAP is required. This includes knowledge of accounting standards, principles, and procedures, and applying GAAP in financial reporting and compliance.

  • Understanding of fixed assets, accrual accounting, loans, investments and related issues.

  • General knowledge of credit union accounting operations may be desirable.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formula creation, data modeling, PivotTables, Power Query, VBA macros, and financial forecasting.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as virtual programs for online webinars.  Familiarity with Jack Henry Symitar programs is a plus.

  • Managerial effectiveness and ability to lead others. 

  • Passionate about teamwork and having a positive influence on others. 

  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Willingness to engage in difficult situations using outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.  

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as virtual programs for online webinars. Familiarity with Jack Henry Symitar programs is a bonus.

  • Effective project management skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 

  • Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs. 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Accounting.

  • Directly related experience, in addition to minimum required experience, may be considered as a substitution. Any exception requires HR and Executive level review and approval. 

  • Minimum of 7 years of applicable experience with at least 2 years in a management capacity.

  • CPA, CMA, or similar certification is preferred
