What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you want to have a real impact in supporting compelling real-world missions?

We are seeking a motivated R&D Computer Scientist to join our dynamic team. The selected candidate will be part of Sandia's Space Mission Engineering Program Office (SMEPO) to support science and engineering projects that will advance our national security in space.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work on real-world missions with extraordinary people in National Security.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and represent Sandia within the technical community.

  • Develop solutions for Space Domain Awareness (SDA) challenges, develop and enhance systems, perform software development.

  • Interact with astrodynamics software tools.

  • Design, create, test, optimize and validate mathematical algorithms.

  • Utilize statistical and machine learning methodologies.

  • Support integration within larger systems.

  • Conduct research and development on emerging technologies.

  • Guide the direction of the group to strategize with other senior staff and create new ideas for new research endeavors.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience defined by the following parameters:

  • An Associate's degree in a relevant discipline plus four (4) years of directly related relevant work experience; or

  • A High School Diploma plus eight (8) years of directly related relevant work experience. *

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI clearance which may require a polygraph test.

    *Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field with extensive programming experience.

  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain an SCI.

  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.

    Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • DOD and/or IC space organizations.

  • Technical Experience:

  • Proficiency in orbital mechanics.

  • Cislunar trajectory design and analysis.

  • GNC algorithms.

  • Relative dynamics and formation flight of satellites.

  • Geodyssey and frame transformations.

  • Astrodynamics software tools such as GMAT, STK, FreeFlyer, or equivalent.

  • Linux-based and Windows-based systems.

  • Managing version control using Git.

  • Programming Skills - Python, MATLAB, C , and/or Java.

  • Develop and implement numerical algorithms for orbit determination and propagation.

  • Simulation and Modeling Experience:

  • High-fidelity simulation tools for modeling spacecraft dynamics and the cislunar environment.

  • Using numerical methods for orbit determination and modeling.

  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data and solve complex problems.

  • Ability to develop and apply mathematical models and algorithms.

  • Data Analysis:

  • Proficiency in analyzing tracking data to refine orbital parameters.

  • Experience in processing real-world data from electro-optical/neuromorphic sensors.

  • Communication and Collaboration:

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex astrodynamics concepts to multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong collaboration skills to work with mission planners, engineers, and scientists.

  • Ability to prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and documentation.

The Space Mission Engineering Program Office is focused on developing future program opportunities, engaging with key external communities, agencies, and industrial entities. We team with the broad S&T community to drive the development of technologies that differentiate Sandia as a key member of the Nation's space community.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
