What Your Job Will Be Like


We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team and support building mechanical systems!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform minor designs in support of customer requests with Facility Project Manager approval and maintain as-builts for in-house designs.
  • Maintain a broad understanding of the building systems, safety systems structures and components, and design basis.
  • Lead all efforts for planned outages, coordination, and building occupant notifications.
  • Write high rigor planned outage procedures and switching memos and review/approve all procedures and memos for assigned portfolio.
  • Collaborate with Architect/Engineer partners on system capacities and design basis.
  • Participate in building systems performance monitoring, system analysis, and operate per the design basis within assigned portfolio.
  • Identify facility project needs through the Condition Assessment, Resource Conservation, or Operations processes and assist in integrating those needs across the site.
  • Support project requirements development, developing and analyzing design options and alternatives, Architect/Engineer Q&A, engineered safety, and project design reviews focusing on specification and standard reviews at the building system level operations and maintainability of equipment.
  • Review and advise changes to Real Estate Operating Permit (REOP).
  • Provide technical expertise and analysis in support of predictive and preventative maintenance technologies.
  • Adhere to FMS business process and identify improvements and best practices.
  • Support Affinity Groups, Standards, Specifications and Design Manual development, and improvement.
  • Review Facilities Control System (FCS) alarms and issues with Building Operator/Engineering Technologist for resolution.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range


$85,100 - $164,100

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline plus three (3) years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Mechanical Engineering New Mexico Professional Engineer (NMPE) license.
  • Possess the New Mexico Fundamentals Engineering certificate.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline or Doctoral Degree in relevant discipline with an emphasis in HVAC or mechanical utilities plus two (2) or more years of relevant experience .
  • Experience working with nuclear facilities and using computerized facilities management systems (Maximo, Tririga, etc).
  • NNSA, DOE ,or other federal government real property asset management requirements experience.
  • Experience with current mechanical codes and standards (IBC, ASHRAE), scoping detailed mechanical projects, and troubleshooting mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following:
  • Mechanical design engineering.
  • Analytical and reasoning skills necessary to identify and resolve mechanical risk issues.
  • Coordination of mechanical outages.
  • Developing and implementing a preventive maintenance plan.
  • Leadership skills including the ability to articulate the vision to key stakeholders.
  • Basic knowledge of technical building or site infrastructure design and construction.
  • Working knowledge and understanding in Facilities engineering, design, construction and contracting, best standards and practices.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.

About Our Team


The Mechanical Engineering department is day-to-day engineering support for facility mechanical systems. Responsibilities include maintenance support, developing lockout tagout procedures, in-house design, design reviews, project scoping, reliability-centered maintenance analysis, lifecycle asset management planning, mechanical equipment specifications, and design specifications.

Security Clearance


Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs


If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
