Position Summary

Must Be A Sandia Tribal Member.

Under direct supervision, provides basic non-sworn law enforcement services of Tribal, State and Federal laws, to include criminal and traffic ordinances and codes, designed to protect the lives and property of Pueblo residents and visitors.

Supervision Exercised

Supervised by the Police Chief, Captain and Police Sergeants.

Major Duties And Responsibilities

May perform any or all of the following duties:

  1. Patrol by vehicle or on foot, Indian country or within the exterior boundaries of the Pueblo of Sandia to provide public safety and enforce tribal laws.
  2. Respond to radio dispatches, phone-in calls, informant tips, walk-in traffic and initiate appropriate response(s).
  3. Respond to and investigate crimes reported by private parties, Bureau of Indian Affairs Law Enforcement Dispatcher, Chief of Police or other law enforcement agencies.
  4. Apprehend Native American law violators and make arrests based on probable cause.
  5. Serve court documents to include but not limited to; court summons, court subpoenas, arrest warrants, search warrants and civil papers.
  6. Attend court hearings, testify, present evidence and seek prosecution through the courts. May also serve as an expert witness.
  7. Respond to and investigate traffic accidents.
  8. Direct traffic and perform patrol activities as needed.
  9. Assist the Police Chief, Tribal Courts, Probation Officer, BIA Social Service Agent, Social Worker or any law enforcement agent with child and elderly abuse cases.
  10. Keep detailed activity and prepare case reports.
  11. Answers questions and complaints from the public.
  12. Provides customer service by responding to people’s needs and emergencies.
  13. Maintains confidentiality of law enforcement sensitive information and confidential sources. 
  14. Prepare/give classes and speeches to promote safety/awareness.
  15. Check and maintain vehicles and personal protective equipment.
  16. Attend advanced training seminars and specialized training classes.
  17. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned.

  1. Ability to read/write and prepare detailed daily activity and case reports.
  2. Ability to deal effectively with the public.
  3. Ability to prepare and give oral presentations to the public.
  4. Ability to investigate accidents and crime scenes and make arrests.
  5. Ability to prepare and prosecute cases and give courtroom testimony.
  6. Ability to plan tasks and manage time efficiently.
  7. Ability to receive telephone calls and respond to emergencies.
  8. Knowledge of tribal, state and federal laws/enforcement procedures.
  9. Knowledge of traffic ordinances and codes.
  10. Knowledge of maintenance requirements for departmental and personal protective equipment.
  11. Knowledge of tribal policies, safety practices, regulations and standard operating procedures

Ability to operate radio communication equipment, digital recording equipment, computers, printers and electronic equipment.

Minimum Qualifications, Education And Experience

Required

  1. High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent  
  2. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License 
  3. Must be at least 20 years of age prior to start, and at least 21 years of age by graduation from the academy

Licensing Status

  1. Must be able to successfully pass a background and character investigation in compliance with PL 101.630.
  2. Will require a post-offer, pre-employment, and random drug screening.
  3. Must successfully pass all of the following additional requirements: vision requirements; medical examination; physical agility examination in accordance with State and Federal guidelines; psychological test prior to the start of Law Enforcement Academy; has not been convicted of or pled guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or within the 3-year period immediately preceding their application, to any violation of any federal or state law or local ordinance relating to aggravated assault, theft, driving while intoxicated, controlled substances or other crime including moral turpitude and has not been released or discharged under dishonorable conditions from any of the armed forces of the United States; background on driving record.

Working Conditions

  1. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outside work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions.
  2. Work hours subject to rotating days, shiftwork and holidays with overtime work required.
  3. Subject to hazards which may cause personal bodily harm; possible exposure to toxins and drugs, arduous physical exertion under rigorous and unusual conditions, fumes, explosives, automotive fluids, smoke; diseases; cuts bruises, burns, common cold, influenza, dust, odors and elevated noise levels.
  4. Tasks may be performed on uneven, inclined, hard and soft carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces.
  5. Duties may involve walking, running, jumping, climbing over barriers, discharging a firearm, standing for long periods of time, sitting and crouching.
  6. Specific required movements include the following:
    1. Trunk- bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, carry.
    2. Arms – reach, carry, lift, twist, and rotate.
    3. Legs – lift, push, pull, twist, and rotate.
    4. Hands – Grasp, manipulate bilateral coordination, hand and eye coordination, and overall and finger dexterity.
    5. Lift up to 85% of body weight.
