  • What Your Job Will Be Like

    Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our Nation's security? If so the Sandia National Laboratories Diagnostics and Instrumentation Services Department is seeking an experienced Nuclear Analysis Engineer to join the team. This staff member will be expected to lead the Compliance & Requirements Management team in overseeing quality assurance activities related to four distinct programs : Radiation Protection Sample Diagnostics, Radiation Protection Dosimetry, Radiation Protection Instrumentation and Sample Management Office.

    On any given day, you may be called on to :

  • Direct and supervise implementation of quality assurance programs across the department through leadership of the Compliance & Requirements Management team.
  • Provide advisement to Department Manager and Department Program Leaders on quality assurance and control issues.
  • Translate DOE Laboratory Accreditation Program and other regulatory requirements into quality management system related processes, tools and practices.
  • Author and maintain quality-related procedures and processes.
  • Plan, lead and conduct internal assessments.
  • Analyze, identify and track trends in analytical data from a variety of laboratory sources (e.g. instrument control charts, dosimetry, and radiobioassay results) to detect areas of risk and systemic issues.
  • Oversee internal performance testing and blind audits of DOELAP accredited processes.
  • Serve on technical teams to accomplish laboratory improvement projects that will keep operations up to date with corporate and laboratory accreditation requirements, and serve the diverse needs of internal customers, particularly in the areas of Environment, Safety and Health.
  • Interact with customers to develop data quality objectives, assist them with the interpretation of radiological measurement data results and communicate technical information to them and other stakeholders.
  • Partner with researchers and team members to plan and provide customized analyses on special research and development projects.
  • Travel on occasion and present technical information at conferences and meetings.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

    Salary Range

    99,400 - $193,600

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
  • Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, Radiochemistry or related scientific field.
  • 5 years of relevant professional-level experience to quality for the Senior level, or

  • 8 years of relevant professional-level experience to quality for the Professional level
  • Ability to obtain DOE Radiological Worker II qualification.
  • Experience, knowledge and training in analytical chemistry and / or radiochemistry and / or radiobioassay.
  • Experience with laboratory Quality Assurance processes, method verification, validation, and conduct of operations.
  • Experience with radiological data interpretation and analysis including nuclide identification and quantification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Qualifications We Desire

  • Ability to clearly convey thoughts, concepts and directions both verbally and in writing.
  • Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, Radiochemistry or a closely related scientific field.
  • Experience providing dedicated quality management services in a DOE operational radiation protection program.
  • Demonstrated experience with implementation of dosimeter and radiobioassay ANSI standards (e.g., ANSI N13.11, N13.30, N13.32).
  • Demonstrated experience with implementation of DOE Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) standards (e.g., DOE-STD1111, DOE-STD-1095, DOE-STD-1112-2019).
  • Proven track-record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work and interact effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Databases and reporting software experience (e.g. SQL Server / Oracle, Crystal Reports, etc.)
  • Experience with instrument control software for laboratory measurement equipment.
  • Operational experience with radiological laboratory equipment, such as gamma spectrometers, gas proportional counters, liquid scintillation counters or thermoluminescence dosimeter readers.
  • Self-motivated and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience with statistical methods and tools.
  • About Our Team

    The Radiation Protection organization supports the mission of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) through development and implementation of sound radiation protection principles for the varied radiological activities performed at SNL. As a component of the Radiation Protection organization, the Diagnostics and Instrumentation Services Department provides internal and external customers with high-quality radiological and chemical sample analysis, personnel dosimetry and instrumentation calibration services. Customers include a variety of SNL programs and projects including the Radiation Protection operational groups, SNL Nuclear Facilities, Nuclear Deterrence, NEST response and Pulsed Power Sciences divisions.

    Posting Duration

    Security Clearance

    Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment / education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

    Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Position Information

    This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

    Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
