What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sheriff's Sergeant - Internal Applicants Only position at Sandoval County?
Under general supervision, supervises the activities of Sheriff's Deputies on an assigned shift or operations group; assures that Deputies are ready and prepared for duty; assures the consistent application of Sandoval County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) regulations and procedures, and effective enforcement of state and Federal laws; handles minor citizen complaints, oversees special detail operations, initial critical incident management and performs other duties as assigned.

- High School Diploma/GED Certificate and five years’ experience as a Sheriff's Deputy or Police Officer OR an Associate’s Degree in Criminology or related field and three years experience as a Sheriff's Deputy or Police Officer
- Must have successfully completed the one-year probationary period with Sandoval County.
- Must not have received disciplinary action of a reprimand or greater for the 12 months preceding the closing date of an open sergeant’s position. Note: Employees who have received discipline of a written reprimand or above are not eligible to participate in the promotion testing process or to be promoted, until at least twelve calendar months have elapsed since such discipline was levied. An employee having a written reprimand or above for discipline that has no bearing on an applicant’s qualifications for Sergeant may petition the Sheriff to waive the written reprimand exclusion. The Sheriff’s determination to waive the written reprimand exclusion is completely at his/her discretion and is not grievable. Minimum Qualifications are established by the Sheriff and HR Director which shall include the requirement to have completed the probationary period.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid New Mexico Driver’s License
- Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.
Additional Requirements:
- Must pass a background check applicable to position.
- Must pass a pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Test.
This position is subject to random alcohol and drug testing in accordance with Sandoval County Personnel Rules and Regulations Article XIII Drug and Alcohol Policy and Testing- Drug Free Workplace.
- Enforces local, state and Federal laws, according to SCSO policies, procedures and regulations; makes proper decisions using sound judgment and operational experience; supervises Deputies and reviews daily logs and activity reports; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Supervises and trains assigned staff; deploys personnel, monitors work, and evaluates performance.
- Assures that Deputies are ready and prepared for duty, are adequately trained and equipped, and are held accountable for duties and responsibilities assigned; conducts staff briefings, and communicates special law enforcement issues and goals.
- Monitors and coordinates team activities; reviews Deputies' work progress and special assignments for proper attention to detail and procedures; assists Deputies in the performance of their duties.
- Reviews and corrects case reports and technical paperwork; prepares administrative forms, payroll and timekeeping reports, activity summaries, and statistical reports.
- May be assigned to special operations, enforcement, security, investigative, and tactical teams.
- Conducts inquiries of citizen complaints or other allegations of employee misconduct.
- Reviews crime data to identify trends and patterns of criminal activity.
- Represents the SCSO at court and case hearings; prepares reports and materials requested and subpoenaed by the courts; and testifies in court cases.
- Works with citizens to identify and improve neighborhood problems and enforcement issues.
- Coordinates with County departments, and Federal, state and local public safety organizations in order to coordinate and resolve law enforcement issues; provides liaison to community groups and media.
- Performs the duties of a Sheriff's Deputy as needed to meet workload demands.
