Sandy Hill Nursery School, Inc. is a non-profit, family-participation preschool that was founded by parents in 1966. We are looking for an amazing new director who will help the school’s parent board of directors steer Sandy Hill into the future while preserving all of the magic of its treasured history. The ideal candidate is passionate about working with young children and their families and thrives in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Sandy Hill is committed to offering an intentional, child-led, play-based curriculum and providing a family-centered, joyful early learning environment. We are located on the site of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito and while we are not affiliated, we enjoy a mutually respectful friendship. Our campus is very special - set on a hillside overlooking the ocean, it has a wilderness feel, despite being conveniently located in the heart of Solana Beach. A love of the outdoors and of all things nature is a must.
We are searching for someone who is equally capable of helping children find solutions to their challenges as they are at assisting staff members with the same. General Duties
- Reports to the parent board of directors, collaborates on all matters requiring board input and helps facilitate smooth transitions between parent boards, which change annually.
- Upholds Sandy Hill’s play-based, holistic philosophy about early education
- Works closely with the assistant director to help manage the business of running a preschool
- Leads staff in curriculum development/implementation and building relationships with families
- Maintains positive relationship with the Fellowship and its members and staff
- Coordinates field trips, visiting organizations, etc.
- Helps coordinate and is present at all school-wide events (including some evening and weekend events).
Staff-Supervision
- Recruits, interviews, hires, orients, evaluates and supervises all applicants and staff
- Facilitates staff goal-setting/reaching in order to maintain high quality interactions and curriculum
- Arranges, plans and leads staff meetings and biannual in-service days; coordinates and oversees professional development plans for staff members
- Meets regularly with teachers in addition to scheduled staff meetings
- Arranges for and orients quality substitute teachers as needed
- Visits classes frequently to observe and ensure that all staff members are adhering to best practices and standards
- Helps resolve behavioral challenges with students and coordinate with families as needed
- Fosters cohesion between and among classrooms and staff members
Family Participation Management
- Coordinates parent volunteer program and helps recruit and train room parents
- Coordinates, acts as liaison to and oversees volunteer committees
- Along with family volunteers, assists with planning and execution of annual fundraisers
Qualifications and Requirements:
- 5 years preschool teaching experience
- 2 years experience as a preschool center director
- Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Child Development or related field (or a demonstrated commitment to continued education and professional growth in the field of Early Education)
- Knowledge and understanding of Title 22 requirements
- Qualified to fulfill the Child Care Center Director role per Title 22; CTC Site Supervisor or Director permit preferred
- Supervisory and/or mentoring experience
- Background clearance, CPR/First Aid certification, proof of required vaccines and TB clearance.
- Employee Health screening will be required within 7 days of hire.

Hours: This position is somewhat flexible in terms of total working hours but we would like to have someone who can commit to being on site during school hours most days if possible. Students are on campus M-F from 8:30-2:30.
