Founded in 1961, Sandy Spring Friends School is a progressive, coed, academically-rigorous day and boarding school serving approximately 620 students from age three through 12th grade. The campus is located on 140 acres in the historic Sandy Spring area of Montgomery County, Maryland, and the School is approved by the Maryland State Board of Education and accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools.

Summary: The Upper School (grades 9-12) seeks candidates for a long term substitute teacher to teach AP English and English 10. We seek an individual who is dynamic, professional, and comfortably implements student-centered, inquiry-based learning strategies in the classroom. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the position includes advising and for students. Depending on the candidate’s interests and the needs of the School, the position may include additional opportunities such as coaching and/or other co-curricular activities.
Requirements: Ideal candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field and a master’s degree is desirable. Candidates should have significant and relevant experience working in a school setting with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and, at a minimum, two years of full-time high school teaching experience. The ideal candidate will have a desire to work with Upper School students in a supportive college-preparatory environment. Candidates should possess basic computer literacy for both administrative and instructional purposes, as well as strong interpersonal and written communication skills. Knowledge of Quaker history and education is desirable, but not required.
Physical Requirements: Daily desk work includes significant amounts of telephone and computer time as well as mobility around the entire campus. This includes frequent walking inside and outside, maneuvering stairs as a part of daily routines. Bending and squatting as required to participate in activities; lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds; and the ability to maneuver as necessary within a regular classroom and office setting.

Salary: $190 - $220 per day
