Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing individuals. The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and be able to interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa. This role is essential in various settings, including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and community events, ensuring that all parties can communicate clearly and effectively.
Duties
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals in real-time.
- Translate ASL back into spoken language for hearing individuals, maintaining the original message's intent and tone.
- Facilitate communication in various environments, including classrooms, meetings, medical appointments, and public events.
- Collaborate with other professionals to ensure the needs of deaf or hard-of-hearing clients are met appropriately.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards of interpreting practices.
- Stay updated on advancements in linguistics and interpreting techniques to enhance skills and effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; additional languages are a plus (multilingual candidates encouraged to apply).
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional writing/captioning experience.
- Minimum of an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or higher, or equivalent experience.
- Certification for interpreter providers must be obtained from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, CI, CT, CI / CT or CSC
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and Sign English (SE).
- Ability to interpret oral communications for Deaf and/or Hearing Impaired individuals.
