Sankofa Urban Farm Manager
The Sankofa Urban Farm Manager oversees all aspects of the organization’s urban agricultural sites, such as the The People’s Garden and the Tennessee St Pollinator Garden ensuring sustainable food production, staff and volunteer management, and community engagement. This role is responsible for crop cultivation, infrastructure maintenance, educational programming, and advocacy for urban agriculture. The Farm Manager will work closely with the Fresh Start Market and report directly to the Director of Programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a seasonal planting plan based on market demand and local conditions.
- Oversee all aspects of crop cultivation, including planting, weeding, pest management, irrigation, and harvesting.
- Monitor soil health and apply sustainable farming practices.
- Train, and supervise farm staff and volunteers, providing ongoing development.
- Delegate tasks and ensure efficient workflow among team members.
- Maintain garden infrastructure and equipment, including greenhouses, irrigation systems, and storage facilities.
- Manage inventory of seeds, supplies, and tools.
- Track production data and financial records to assess gardens performance.
- Organize garden tours, educational workshops, and community events to engage the public.
- Collaborate with Fresh Start Market to distribute produce.
- Build relationships with community stakeholders and advocate for urban agriculture initiatives.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge of horticulture techniques, crop cultivation, pest management, soil science, and sustainable farming practices.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage staff and volunteers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage with diverse audiences, including staff, community members, and partners.
- Understanding of financial management, marketing, and sales strategies related to agricultural production.
- Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding tasks outdoors in all weather conditions (e.g., lifting, bending, and prolonged standing).
- Flexibility to accommodate seasonal demands and adapt to changing conditions.
- Passion for community engagement and urban agriculture advocacy.
This position reports to the Director of Programs and plays a key role in advancing Sankofa CDC’s mission to create sustainable and accessible food systems within the urban environment.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.14 - $16.83 per hour
