Title: Evening Security

Classification: Part-time, Non-exempt

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Facility Manager

Compensation: $23.00-$25.00 per hour*

Hours needed:

Monday - Thursday (4:00PM-11:00PM)

Friday – Sunday (4:00PM-8:00PM)

More hours available depending on coverage.


Mission: The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History inspires a thirst for discovery and a passion for the natural world.


Position Summary: Responsible for securing Museum galleries and offices, performs regular review of public areas and parking lots; conducts final securing of doors and setting of alarm system. In addition, this position provides services ensuring a secure and safe environment for our museum guests and staff and provides support to the museum’s facility use and the museum’s programs where assigned. Interfaces with staff and groups utilizing Museum campus after hours.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Reports promptly for start of evening shift at selected time for a supervisor check-in, debrief, and to close and secure exhibit galleries and office areas when the museum closes to the public.
  • Surveys grounds (including parking lot, backyard and Creekside areas) at least two times per shift and makes observations related to lighting and safety issues, noting these in Evening Report.
  • Keeps an Evening Report by computer at a station provided by the museum noting any irregularities, incidents of missing and defective equipment, safety hazards, security issues, suspicious activities, injuries, and property damage.
  • Submits Evening Report to supervisor at the end of the shift for review, action, and archiving by supervisor.
  • Notifies authorities of any unusual, potential criminal activity on or near museum grounds. Additionally, notifies museum management and/or supervisor of these incidents.
  • Aids individuals and groups at museum events and meetings, including, but not limited to, use of museum resources (tables, extension cords, etc.), ensuring their safe return, opening doors, and operating climate control systems.
  • Secures the parking lot at the end of the working shift and calls alarm monitoring company to verify that all alarms have been properly set.
  • Monitors surveillance cameras.
  • Occasional cleaning of exhibit halls includes any or all of the following: dusting, exhibit glass and Plexiglass cleaning with appropriate solutions.
  • Supports Museum events as needed.
  • Contributes to a positive guest experience by greeting and addressing any questions when encountering guests as they navigate through the Museum and Sea Center.
  • Supports the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for fellow staff, guests and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:

  • Able to operate and use a hand truck and electric transport cart for moving supplies.
  • Able to use ladders.
  • Able to regularly work one weekend day.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions; good auditory skills with a full range of hearing and good vision including acuity, depth perception, color vision.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and Microsoft Word, with comfort using technology.
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with the public.
  • Able to respond to emergency situations including but not limited to chemical spills, fires, and evacuations. This includes interfacing with emergency responders and museum management personnel.
  • Flexible time management (working with other departments and projects).
  • Must present a professional demeanor in dress (uniform) and interactions with public and authorities. Museum-issued uniform shirts will be provided.
  • Must hold a valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record, to become an authorized driver of Museum vehicles.

Work Environment:

  • Frequent work throughout all Museum facilities including meeting facilities, galleries, exhibit halls, presentation halls, research laboratories, storage rooms, and maintenance and/or metal/wood shop.
  • Frequent work outdoors, walking grounds at night and in inclement weather.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, sitting, climbing (stairs & ladders), crawling and lifting of moderate to heavy loads (50lbs).
  • Occasional work in elevated places.
  • Occasional work with and possible exposure to chemicals, including cleaning agents, paint, gasoline, and other solvents.

*The pay range above represents the budgeted range for a new hire, encompassing the minimum and maximum rates. Placement within this range will depend on factors such as specific skills, qualifications, relevant years of experience, and alignment with the salaries of current employees in similar roles. In most cases, newly hired employees are placed below the midpoint of the range.
