Definition
Under general supervision, the Electro-Mechanic performs skilled electrical/electronic and mechanical work to diagnose, maintain, repair, rebuild, overhaul, service, inspect, and test light rail transit vehicles and equipment.
About the Light Rail Maintenance Department
Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) Maintenance is located at the Guadalupe Light Rail Division. LRV Maintenance is responsible for timely and reliable maintenance, preventive maintenance, inspections, repair and servicing of light rail vehicles and service equipment.
After a light rail vehicle returns from revenue service at the end of each day, Maintenance performs an interior inspection/walk-through of the vehicle, analyzes the Operator Defect Card, performs a visual inspection of the vehicle undercarriage, performs exterior and interior cleaning, cleans and repairs windows and seating, and removes and repairs graffiti and vandalism.

Under general supervision, the Electro-Mechanic performs skilled electrical/electronic and mechanical work to diagnose, maintain, repair, rebuild, overhaul, service, inspect, and test light rail transit vehicles and equipment.

Typical Tasks
- Performs safety and preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles, systems and equipment;
- Documents defects, maintenance and repairs;
- Tests, maintains, repairs, and overhauls light rail vehicle electrical, electronic and mechanical systems and equipment in accordance with schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, operations manuals and manufacturer instructions;
- Operates and maintains shop equipment and tools;
- Makes time and material cost estimates and maintains records;
- Performs re-railing of equipment;
- Familiarizes other workers in vehicle maintenance and repair, car movements, and maintenance of shop equipment;
- Installs communication devices on cars;
- Maintains a safe and clean shop area;
- Operates computer for related data input and retrieval;
- Prepares written reports, documents defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs;
- May be assigned the work of lower level classes in the job series;
- Performs related work as required.
Training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electrically powered rail transit vehicles.
OR
Training and experience equivalent to completion of a two-year degree in electronic technology and two years of experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of electro-mechanical systems similar to those found in VTA light rail vehicles.
OR
Demonstrated experience and training equivalent to a high school diploma and four years of experience in a maintenance environment working on systems similar to those found in a light rail vehicle including air conditioning, DC motors, generators, circuit diagrams, lighting and electrical troubleshooting.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to qualify for and maintain a Class B license with passenger (P) endorsement and a maintenance LRV operation certification.
Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and odd and unusual hours.Knowledge of:
- AC/DC electrical systems;
- Operating principles of analog and digital electronics, electronic control circuitry and associated mechanical systems;
- Heating, lighting, air conditioning, motors, brakes and related systems;
- Operating and preventive maintenance requirements of electric transit vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment;
- General shop safety procedures;
- Testing and inspection methods.
- Perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, rebuilding, overhauling, and safety/preventive maintenance inspections;
- Analyze malfunctions in electrical/electronic transit equipment and determine repair requirements;
- Perform electronic fabrication and assembly tasks, such as soldering and wire harnessing;
- Make time and material cost estimates and keep accurate records;
- Implement preventive maintenance and safety inspection procedures;
- Use test and shop equipment and tools;
- Use parts and supply manuals;
- Operates a computer for related data input and retrieval;
- Meet established deadlines;
- Give oral and written instructions;
- Effectively read, understand, and use technical information found in repair manuals, service change bulletins, and applicable technical documents, including parts and supply manuals;
- Learn and stay current on all new technologies introduced into the transit industries as it relates to light rail vehicle maintenance;
- Familiarize other Electro-Mechanics and other classifications in the proper method of performing their job;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of business.
