What are the responsibilities and job description for the Planning Intern position at Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority?
The Ideal Candidate:
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Planning Intern to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a curiosity and passion for urban planning, public transit, bicycle and pedestrian planning, and/or community engagement. The position offers opportunities to work alongside professional transportation planners on a variety of efforts that span the areas of transit service planning, land use and transportation planning, and bicycle/pedestrian planning. As a Planning Intern, you will gain hands-on experience in these fields and contribute to meaningful projects that equitably shape the future of our cities, the transportation network, and the communities they serve.
- Graduate student or third-/fourth-year undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Urban Planning/Studies, Transportation and/or Land Use Planning, or a related field such as Environmental Studies/Science or, Geography
- Although the internship is comprehensive in nature involving work in three different planning fields, candidates do not need to have experience in all three areas to be considered.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and GIS software, and willingness to learn other relevant planning tools on the job.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently on assigned tasks with some supervision.
- Enthusiasm for engaging with VTA riders and the diverse communities VTA serves.
- Preferred, though not required for the intern to have a valid California driver’s license to conduct traffic counts and perform field observations.
Length of Internship:
(6) Six months - from April until September 2025.
Work Schedule:
Applicants must be able to commit to approximately 20 hours per week (maximum 29 hours per week) between the hours of Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Schedule is flexible.

- Catalog standard development review comments and compile a list/map key local projects and plans to support land use and development planning staff policies and efforts.
- Support bicycle / pedestrian / Complete Streets projects and plans, which may involve summarizing relevant planning documents, compiling, summarizing, or geocoding bike/pedestrian related data, conducting counts, or performing field observations.
- Support development of the annual (2026) transit service plan, which may involve creating maps or other visualizations and shadowing/assisting staff at community meetings and public events.
- Assist with taking meeting minutes/notes, gathering, and organizing/synthesizing community and stakeholder feedback.
