About the Position :

The Principal Data Warehouse Architect collaborates with internal application teams to improve data integration and standardize data quality to support strategic enterprise-level analysis. This advanced professional classification is distinguished by its focus on data leadership, architecture, and business alignment. The Principal Data Warehouse Architect is responsible for ensuring the integrity and integration of data across all VTA business units, acting as a technical expert and consultant to both management and the data warehouse team. This role requires a deep understanding of data warehousing principles, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to translate business needs into effective data solutions. The Principal Data Warehouse Architect plays a critical role in designing and implementing the data warehouse environment, including data modeling, extraction, transformation, and loading processes. They also provide guidance on data governance, lead innovation efforts, and collaborate closely with business units to identify new opportunities for leveraging data to improve decision-making and customer service.

About the Division : VTA’s Technology Department drives innovation and excellence, providing top-notch, cost-effective tech services and solutions. They support cutting-edge technology, including computers, CCTV, audio / visual systems, ERP, records management, communications, web applications, and enterprise infrastructure. The team plays a crucial role in integrating technology through strategic planning, training, and consulting, while managing high-speed, reliable wired and wireless networks and secure information systems. The Program Management Office, Technology Working Group, and Technology Steering Committee ensure all new projects align with VTA’s mission.

The Ideal Candidate : We are seeking an exceptional candidate who is self-driven with leadership qualities and potential to join our team in the role of a Principal Data Warehouse Architect for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. As an integral part of our organization, the ideal candidate will possess a unique set of skills and qualities that align with the dynamic and evolving technological needs of our organization.

Preferred Technology knowledge and experience :

  • Functions and Characteristics of data warehouse
  • Transit, Transportation, Operations, or Logistics System Applications
  • Microsoft Power Platform – Power BI, Power Automate and Power Apps
  • Software Development Life Cycle

Typical Tasks :

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the data warehouse team, including setting priorities, assigning tasks, and monitoring progress;
  • Collaborates with business units to identify and define data requirements and translate them into technical specifications;
  • Designs, develops, and implements data warehouse solutions, including data models, ETL processes, and data marts;
  • Oversees the administration and maintenance of the data warehouse environment, ensuring data integrity, security, and performance;
  • Evaluates and recommends new data warehousing technologies and tools to enhance capabilities and improve efficiency;
  • Develops and maintains documentation, standards, and procedures for the data warehouse environment;
  • Provides technical guidance and mentorship to other data warehouse team members;
  • Monitors and analyzes data warehouse performance and identifies areas for improvement;
  • Troubleshoots and resolves data warehouse issues and problems;
  • Stays abreast of industry best practices and emerging trends in data warehousing;
  • Prepares reports on development projects and other activities;
  • Documents procedures and manuals for data warehouse architect strategy design;
  • Defines and manages project scope, deliverables, schedules, budgets, and task lists and tracks projects from initiation to successful completion;
  • Selects, supervises, and organizes training for staff to support new systems;
  • Maintains technical and functional competency and keeps up with industry best practices;
  • Supports internal customer business needs and serves as a technical point of contact for the user community;
  • Communicates project status and resolves project issues, problems, and changes;
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Employment Standards : Sufficient education and increasingly responsible experience to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Development of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is typically obtained through a combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a four-year degree in computer science, engineering, business information systems, management information systems, database information systems, or a closely related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience in designing, implementing, and integrating data, analytics, and cloud technology components, as well as leading cloud platform architecture / engineering.

    Knowledge of :

  • Data warehousing architectures, methodologies, and best practices;
  • Cloud-based data warehousing solutions and associated technologies;
  • Data integration techniques and tools, including ETL / ELT pipelines, data virtualization, and API integration;
  • Relational and NoSQL database systems and their design, administration, and performance tuning;
  • Big data frameworks and tools and their application in data warehousing;
  • Data security best practices, including access control, encryption, and compliance with relevant regulations;
  • Enterprise IT infrastructure, including networking, servers, storage, and virtualization, in both on-premises and cloud environments;
  • Principles and practices of managing complex data warehousing projects;
  • Current trends and emerging technologies in data warehousing and analytics, such as data lakes, data mesh, and AI / ML integration;
  • Business analytics concepts and applications.
  • Ability to :

  • Effectively communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Lead and mentor data warehouse development teams;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions;
  • Present technical recommendations and solutions to management;
  • Analyze and solve complex data-related problems;
  • Meet schedules and timelines;
  • Implement required systems, solutions, and processes needed to manage cloud cost, monitoring, scalability, confidentiality, and redundancy;
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in data warehousing processes and technologies;
  • Understand business processes and how data supports decision-making;
  • Translate business requirements into data warehouse design and development;
  • Manage information systems projects within the data warehousing domain;
  • Develop cost estimates for data warehousing initiatives;
  • Effectively direct, supervise, and train staff as assigned;
  • Prepare clear and concise reports and documentation;
  • Develop and implement goals, objectives, practices, policies, procedures, and work standards;
  • Understand, interpret, and communicate pertinent department policies and procedures;
  • Manage information systems projects in assigned program area;
  • Analyze and resolve technical problems using logical and methodical processes;
  • Develop cost estimates for labor, supplies, and equipment;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Participate in on-call 24 / 7 / 365 support rotations.
