Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Assists our Humane Education Coordinator in the delivery of educational Summer Camp programs to engage children (ages 6-18 years) in positive behaviors regarding animal welfare issues. This is a seasonal full-time position from May 26-August 6. Due to the short-term nature of the position, time off requests cannot be granted. While other duties may be assigned, the essential duties and responsibilities are listed below:
Summer Camp Functions (100%)
· Assist with and lead children’s camp activities, games, and presentations.
· Assist with planning and delivering humane education curriculum as a part of summer camp.
· Prepare teaching aids and materials and monitor camp supplies.
· Handle and care for animals involved in program presentations and activities while adhering to SPCASC animal handling and safety protocols.
· Monitor children during handling and exposure to both domestic and wild animals to maintain a safe and healthy camp environment.
· Positively manage a range of camper behaviors and expectations.
· Assist Education Coordinator with supervising, coordinating duties, and supporting the effectiveness of camp volunteers.
· Assist with providing and maintaining a clean, safe, healthy setting for animals and children.
· Provide a positive, interactive learning environment for campers.
· Perform administrative duties such as: basic reporting of activities, photocopying, photography, sharing on SCSPCA social media channels and other clerical duties as required.
· Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management, volunteers, campers, parents, and the public.
· Work effectively under pressure and be flexible in a fast-paced work environment.
· Model the values of the Santa Cruz SPCA and positively represent the organization at all times.
Perform other duties as required/requested to ensure a positive public image, the well-being of animals and the public, and to improve the functioning of the organization.
Qualifications & Job Requirements Education, Skill, Experience
· One year of experience working with groups of children is preferred.
· High School Diploma or GED equivalent, required.
· Animal handling experience preferred.
· First Aid and CPR training preferred.
· A valid CA Driver’s License and an insurable driving record, required.
· Comfortable with public speaking.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Facebook social media. Ability and willingness to learn other software programs as necessary.
· Computer literacy in word processing, social media.
· Strong organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills.
· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work courteously and collaboratively in a team environment.
· Excellent time management, multi-tasking, problem solving and organizational skills.
· Once trained, one must be able to work with minimal supervision, yet must recognize limitations in knowledge and abilities, and ask for help when needed.
· Must have compassion and concern for both animals and people.
· Passionately supports the mission of the Santa Cruz SPCA and promotes the organization at every opportunity.
· Upon hire, you must pass a background check and complete mandated reporter training.
Work Environment & Physical Activities
Our Seasonal Summer Camp Counselor will work with children ranging from 6 years old through 18 years old. Work is performed in a classroom, out in our animal yards and inside our animal shelter setting with potential exposure to:
· Zoonotic diseases, disinfectants, and animal allergens.
· High noise levels from barking dogs, public interaction, and active shelter operations.
· Large, strong, and fractious animals, with potential for bites, scratches, and handling-related injuries.
Physical requirements include:
· Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
· Regular handling of materials up to 40 lbs. with occasional lifting of up to 60 lbs.
· Regular handling of large, strong dogs up to 100 lbs. requiring physical control and confidence.
Work occurs in an animal shelter environment is often loud, active, and there is frequent engagement with other staff, volunteers, and the public. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in an energetic, dynamic setting where flexibility, collaboration, patience, resilience, and quick decision-making are essential.
