Position Title: Elementary School Counselor
Reports To: Principal and/or Assigned Supervisor
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Summary:
The following is a framework for Santa Fe South Counselors. Specific roles vary from site to site. Santa Fe South Counselors serve as a support for all students, providing guidance and addressing individual needs. Our Counselors work with the Site Administration and District Crisis Counselors to ensure students are receiving proper services. The Counselors work as a team within the District to bring equity and promote a positive culture throughout the District. They assess and follow protocol for any instances where a child or anyone is in danger, including but not limited to suicide ideation, concerns regarding child abuse or neglect, threats to self or others. Counselors work with families regarding excessive absences to stress the importance of attendance and address any needs the family might have. Counselors provide guidance lessons and/or group information when applicable and work with Site Administrators to promote a positive culture where students are cared for so that they can thrive socially and academically.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field with state certification/licensure as a School Counselor is preferred. Candidates working toward such licensure are also encouraged to apply.
Essential Job Functions:
These functions will vary by site, and are not intended to be all inclusive.
Counseling Services:
- Provide individual and small group counseling to students to address academic, social, and emotional needs.
- Help students develop coping strategies, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills.
- Advocate for students’ mental health and overall well-being.
- Conduct assessments and implement appropriate interventions for student support.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, and school staff to create a supportive learning environment.
- Maintain open communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and concerns.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, professional learning communities, and community outreach efforts.
Case Management & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate, confidential records of student interactions and progress.
- Develop and implement individualized support plans for students as needed.
- Provide case management services, connecting families with external resources when necessary.
Crisis Intervention & Safety:
- Assess and respond to situations where students are at risk of harm, including suicide ideation, child abuse, neglect, and threats to self or others.
- Collaborate with site administration and district crisis counselors to ensure student safety.
- Support attendance intervention efforts by working with families to address barriers to school participation.
Data Analysis & Student Support:
- Analyze student data to identify trends affecting academic performance, attendance, and behavior.
- Implement evidence-based interventions and track progress to measure effectiveness.
- Assist in developing school-wide programs that promote positive behavior and mental health awareness.
Other Job Functions:
- Assist with school events, programs, and student engagement activities.
- Provide guidance lessons and small group interventions based on student needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designated supervisor.
