What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Development Manager position at Santa Monica College Foundation?
Purpose: The Senior Development Manager is responsible for supporting development operations: executing development activities and events, identifying donor prospects, developing and cultivating external and internal relationships, and generating gifts (individual, corporate, major, planned, in-kind) to meet annual revenue goals.
Summary: In partnership with the President and Development Director, the Senior Development Manager plans and implements a comprehensive development program, including events, individual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned gifts, email and direct mail, donor stewardship, pipeline development and database maintenance to ensure the organization's financial stability and growth. This individual reports to the Development Director and works with the Foundation staff, Santa Monica College (SMC) staff, and student or part-time worker(s) to achieve fundraising goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fundraising
• Manages development activities including donor and prospect records, donor recognition and stewardship.
• Identifies, organizes, schedules, and conducts prospecting and cultivating opportunities. Identifies individuals and groups with the capacity to give, analyzes prospect information, and plans and executes solicitations to secure gifts.
• Cultivates donor prospects and identifies and convenes groups of donors with common interests to jointly fund a need. Prepares the President, Director of Development, and other College personnel for campus prospect visits and tours.
• Establishes relationships with donor prospects and explains methods of giving, informs prospects of unmet needs, and refines the cultivation plan based on previous communications and information provided.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with donors. Recognizes donors by ensuring donor preferences are applied, generating letters, arranging in-person meetings, tours and event attendance, updating the donor regarding gift impact, and ensuring donor records are updated in Raiser’s Edge database.
• In collaboration with the President and Director of Development, creates donor agreements which contain criteria for how contributions are to be used. Ensures annual and endowed scholarship funds are awarded accurately and according to donor intent.
• Effectively communicates and collaborates with various internal and external constituencies.
• Pursues other fundraising initiatives as deemed appropriate and assigned by the President.
Events
• Designs and produces all events and activations including development of concepts, themes and formats to engage supporters, serve SMC students and our mission, increase brand awareness, and grow revenue.
• Serves as event lead on all event logistics, creating and managing production timelines, budget and internal meetings.
• Develops content for event correspondence, collateral materials, social media and web in collaboration with Development Director.
• Manages event vendors and volunteers; negotiates to secure rates that enhance budget.
• Organizes and maintains files, budgets, and records for all events and activities.
• Oversees the post-event coordination including but not limited to debrief meetings, recognition of key constituents or donors, financial reporting, and data transfer.
Communications, Marketing & Public Relations
• Ability to help prepare and distribute public materials, including press releases, newsletters, social media posts in collaboration with the Development Director and, at times, the SMC Marketing and Community Relations team.
• Ability to update SMC Foundation website with information including, but not limited to donor recognition, fundraising opportunities, and special events.
Qualifications
• A proven and measured record of increased responsibility, with at least 4-6 years of experience, in fundraising including the ability to attract 5 figure contributions for a nonprofit organization (Required)
• Bachelor's degree (Required)
• Knowledge of donor database systems (i.e., Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge) (Highly Desired)
• Knowledge of non-profit operations, characteristics, services, and activities
• Knowledge of principles and best practices of program development for fundraising
• Experience in special events
• Must be experienced with budgets and financial documents
• Excellent organizational skills to implement the logistical requirements of events in a systematic way to optimize efficiency
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other office productivity tools (Canva, Google Docs, Dropbox, social media, etc.)
• Experience in developing creative fundraising concepts with limited resources
• Experience working with foundation boards and/or other types of nonprofit boards
• Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse external and internal audiences
• Excellent writing skills with attention to detail
• Ability to exercise sound judgement and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion

• Ability to travel around the L.A. area in own vehicle, sometimes at short notice
• Possess valid California driver’s license and vehicle with acceptable driving record and insurance requirements
• Willingness and ability to sit for 8 hours at a desk/computer station daily
• Work occasional long hours as needed (evenings and weekends)

• Manage and mentor student or part-time worker(s)
