This recruitment is to establish a one year eligibility list which will be used to fill current & future vacancies, and potential substitute opportunities.

Current Vacancies:
Santa Monica High School

Boys Locker Room 
Monday – Friday (6hrs/day)
8:00am – 2:30pm
School Year

Girls Locker Room 
Monday – Friday (4hrs/day)
2:00pm – 6:00pm
School Year


BASIC FUNCTION:
Under supervision, assists in carrying out the physical education program at elementary and secondary schools by working with students individually and in groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) months paid or verifiable volunteer experience working with school aged (K-12) children in organized group activities, such as those sponsored by a department of parks and recreation, summer camps, YWCA, YMCA, etc.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
A valid First Aid Certificate issued by an authorized agency must be obtained within the first 90 days of employment and subsequently maintained.Note: The statements herein are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees, and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of responsibilities and qualifications of personnel so classified.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Demonstrates and instructs basic skills, knowledge and strategies of organized sports, games and related physical activities, including warm-up and cool-down exercises.
  • Demonstrates and instructs good sportsmanship and citizenship through physical education activities.
  • Assures student participation in the physical education program and reports on student progress to assigned certificated personnel.
  • Maintains acceptable student behavior by observing students in the physical education program and reports problems to assigned certificated personnel.
  • Observes and enforces safety measures to assure the health and safety of students.
  • Supervises students in secondary school locker rooms.
  • Assists in the planning, preparation and organization of physical education activities.
  • Maintains inventory of athletic equipment and requests replacements and repairs as needed.
  • Performs routine clerical duties.
  • May participate in physical education activities as player, scorekeeper, coach, referee or official as required.
  • May administer first aid to students as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Behavior, needs and characteristics of school aged children.
  • Basics of good disciplinary techniques, including conflict resolution.
  • Basic safety rules.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:
  • Learn individual and team sports and games.
  • Use positive reinforcement to help build students' self esteem.
  • Communicate and relate effectively with students, teachers, school administrators and parents.
  • Be a positive role model to students.
  • Be flexible and adapt positively to change.
  • Handle student problems with patience and tact.
  • Exercise good judgment.
  • Keep simple records accurately.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies.
SUPERVISION:
Direct supervision is received from assigned certificated personnel. No supervision is exercised over other staff.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to see, hear, and clearly communicate both orally and in writing. Stamina to stand, walk, run, throw, jump; agility to bend, kneel, squat; ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

For those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications, the examination process will consist of any one or more of the following: Training and Experience Evaluation, Written Test, Performance Test, and/or Structured Interview. Additional information pertaining to the examination process will be emailed to those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications. 

EXAMINATION PROTESTS:
Protest of any part of the examination process must be in writing and received in the office of the Director of Classified Personnel no later than five (5) working days from the date you were notified of examination results. All notifications are sent electronically via email.  Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error.  We are not responsible for any incoming mail that is lost or misdirected after it has been entrusted to the US Postal Service.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY LIST: 
This examination process shall be open to all qualified applicants and shall result in one integrated eligibility list. All eligibility lists shall be established in accordance with Personnel Commission rules and shall be established for a period one (1) year, unless otherwise noted, or until there are fewer than three (3) ranks of eligible candidates who are available.  Candidates are placed on the eligibility list in rank order according to their final examination score.  Final examination scores will not change, but ranking may change as other candidates are added or removed from the list. 

ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT:
Generally, new employees start at the first step on the appointed salary schedule. When filling a permanent vacancy, a new employee may request a higher salary placement based on having training and experience that greatly exceeds the minimum qualifications. An employee may submit a formal request for advanced step consideration on or after the first day of employment. Education transcripts, training certificates, and additional references may be requested for verification purposes.
