HOUSE PRINCIPAL
Santa Monica High School
THE POSITION: Under the professional direction of the Santa Monica High School Lead Principal, the House Principal serves as an instructional leader working with the lead teacher, advisors and teachers of his/her House to ensure that a quality education is received by all students under his/her care; understands the link between teaching and student learning; evaluates the progress and success of his/her House and its students; leads the curricular and instructional development of his/her House; implements instructional student support systems; participates in Samohi’s school-wide instructional leadership team and communicates with other House Principals; develops an inclusive and collaborative relationship with the community; supervises student government; coordinates the management functions and activities of a secondary school operation; monitors student discipline; and performs other related functions as directed.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The position classification requires subject matter expertise in educational programs, and curriculum and instructional strategies at the high school level. Directly related administrative experience is necessary to ensure success in a high school leadership role. The job requires the ability to analyze and offer alternative solutions to issues. It also necessitates the ability to analyze data and develop goals and strategies based on that analysis. Decisions are made by the incumbent that have a critical impact on the goals, organization and administration of educational programs and services of the school and the District. The position classification has supervisory responsibility for planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the quality and quantity of work of professionals and technical/clerical employees. This position requires frequent meetings with teachers, school psychologists and other educational personnel to influence and to motivate, and then to monitor the result objectives of the school operation. This is a sedentary position classification with light work that involves sitting a portion of the time, and includes walking and standing for extended periods. The job also requires the accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with educational materials and objects, and providing oral information and direction. •Evaluates teachers in his/her House in order to promote instruction that leads to improved student achievement.
•Works effectively with teachers to analyze instructional practices and facilitate quality lesson planning.
•Participates with the Lead Principal of Santa Monica High School in hiring new staff for his/her House.
•Monitors attendance and student discipline.
•Analyzes data to determine the effectiveness of programs and strategies.
•Uses data to guide the implementation of new strategies and professional development goals.
•Informs and trains House staff on District and school instructional goals.
•Provides concrete, sustained support for students whose academic achievement is at risk, and works with others to develop new curricular programs for such students.
•Attends school-wide instructional leadership team meetings.
•Generates and shares curricular and instructional ideas with other House Principals and Lead Teachers.
•Communicates with parents and students regarding student progress, important dates, and House and school-wide events.
•Participates in community and parent meetings.
•Meets regularly with the House’s student government.
•Oversees the House’s budget for materials, texts, professional development, and student activities.
•Ensures students are properly scheduled into their classes.
•Collaborates with advisors, teachers, and students to provide a safe and clean campus.
•Serves as a liaison to public safety and youth service agencies in resolving student management and control problems, and student attendance and welfare problems.
•May participate in District and site advisory committees and groups, and may assist in the facilitation of such groups.
•Assists in the planning, organization and implementation of District and State assessments.
•Confers with District personnel and monitors the development and implementation of IEPs and 504 plans.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
1.Principles, methods, strategies, goals, and objectives of public education;
2.Philosophical, educational, fiscal, and legal aspects of public education;
3.Procedures, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to the administration of a high school operation;
4.Strategies for building small learning communities;
5.Curriculum, instruction, and pupil service trends, strategies, and techniques, including standards-based instruction;
6.Student activity, behavior management, and campus supervision and control methods, procedures, and techniques;
7.Methods, procedures, and strategies of supervision of instructional and student body-sponsored activities and programs;
8.Special Education rights, regulations and responsibilities.
Ability to:
1.Develop, articulate and implement a vision of a successful small learning community;
2.Demonstrate effective instructional, organizational, and administrative leadership;
3.Analyze problems, determine alternative solutions, and make appropriate and effective decisions;

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
•Four (4) years of full-time, successful secondary teaching experience.
•Successful completion of a comprehensive administrative internship-training program. Previous school administrative experience is highly desirable.
•Equivalent to the completion of a Master of Arts or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
•Possess, or qualify for, a valid California administrative services credential.
