DEFINITION
Under direction of a school principal, reinforce instruction in an assigned learning environment; perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions assigned to this class may be found in a variety of instructional settings including the classroom, media center, resource center, playground or learning center. Assigned duties encompass a wide range of supportive tasks for the instructional program. The examples of duties is only a partial list of representative tasks assigned to positions in this class. Incumbents may perform only some of the duty examples, depending upon the area of assignment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Reinforce or follow up on the teacher's lessons by reviewing and repeating educational material, reading or telling stories.
Observe and oversee children in a variety of instructional settings. Referee games and discipline students for minor misbehavior in accordance with district and school policies and procedures.
Resolve playground disputes, and / or send messenger to advise school office personnel in event of serious dispute or injury.
Sell and distribute lunch to students if assigned; collect and tally lunch monies. Prepare instructional materials by measuring, cuffing, coloring, assembling, pasting and laminating. Use overhead projector to copy pictures, diagrams and prepare instructional materials.
Keep records reflecting attendance and grades.
Type and / or duplicate instructional materials. Straighten and organize classroom or learning facility. Accompany students on field trips.
Proctor written tests; score tests and convert raw scores according to charts; post results to student records.
Provide information to teacher regarding student progress or problems. Listen to students read.
Lead discussions with students as assigned.
Play games with students and demonstrate arts and crafts projects. Assist students in using audio visual and other equipment including computers. Perform duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of :
Basic principles of child guidance and child development.
Basic methods used in overseeing and directing children's activities.
Basic mathematical concepts.
Correct grammar and spelling.
General purposes and goals of public education.
Oral and written communication skills.
Recordkeeping techniques.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Ability to :
Understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures and policies.
Maintain confidentiality of student information.
Perform routine clerical tasks and use instructional support equipment.
Learn basic tutoring techniques and methods.
Reinforce instruction in an assigned learning environment.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Licenses and Certificates :
May be required to complete up to 11 hours of specific training in an academic program.
NCLB Certification required in one of three ways :
- Possession of an Associates Degree (AA);
- Completion of 48 college semester units (official transcripts required); or
- Completion and passage of the District-approved NCLB proficiency test.
Training and Experience :
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in working with children in an organized setting.
Working Conditions :
Instructional learning environment; subject to bending, stooping, standing for extended periods, walking and occasional lifting.
