Santiam Canyon is located in the beautiful foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range and proudly serves the communities of Mill City, Gates, Detroit, Idanha and surrounding areas. Located close to Salem and other larger towns, Santiam Jr./Sr. High School is an ideal location to teach and collaborate with educational professionals helping students achieve their limitless potential. Santiam operates on a 4 day school week and teacher contracts are 170 work days.
Position Overview:
The head football coach is responsible for the planning, organizing, and the direction of the SJSHS football program at all levels as well as for the conduct of athletes in the locker room, at practice, on the bus, and at games. The expectation is that we are developing student athletes, including their character and skills beyond the wins and losses on the field. There is the potential for a teaching or other position within the district or at SJSHS.
Head Football Coach Duties and Responsibilities:
- Hold organizational meetings for prospective players and encourage potential athletes to participate in football
- Develop and implement an off-season workout program
- Assess player’s skills and assign team positions
- Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development
- Work with the athletic director in scheduling facilities for practices and competition
- Assign duties to assistant coaches as necessary
- Coach, evaluate, and instruct players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment and techniques of the sport
- Observe players during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team development
- Determine game strategy based on the team’s and opponent’s capabilities utilizing game film
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and provide proper supervision of athletes at all times
- Monitor the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met, working with the athletic director
- Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury
- Obtain all required OSAA football trainings and certifications
- Conference with parents/guardians regarding the athletic development of their student as necessary
- Follow state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program (OSAA)
- Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators
- Act as a team representative and promote the sport by communicating with the news media, service clubs, and other organizations
- Follow established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and collection of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, including helmet certification
- Work with the athletic director to nominate athletes for awards (league and school)
- Participate in special events that might include parent’s night, banquets, award nights and pep assemblies
- Maintain eligibility forms, emergency data cards, equipment inventory, and other related records
- Develop youth football players through a youth camp and other potential community events

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow and maintain knowledge of all District policies and procedures
- Appropriately maintain and secure confidential records and inquiries
- Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required
- Comply with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations
- Attend work regularly and on time
- Other duties may be assigned
Required Qualifications:First Aid, CPR, and AED certification, or be willing to obtain one
- Minimum of one year competitive football coaching experience at the high school level or higher preferred
- Desire and ability to work with middle and high school age athletes
- ODE Type 20 license preferred
