Sapphos Environmental, Inc., a leading environmental planning and resource management firm located in Pasadena, California, is seeking to expand its pool of qualified Archaeological Field Technicians for several exciting upcoming projects throughout southern and northern California. This role is essential for supporting our archaeological initiatives aimed at preserving cultural heritage and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
On Call field technicians will work closely under the direct supervision of seasoned Sapphos Environmental staff archaeologists, participating in various field activities related to archaeological survey, excavation, and analysis. Positions will be filled on a project-by-project basis, providing flexibility and diversity in work experiences.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct archaeological surveys and excavations following established protocols and methodologies to identify and assess cultural resources.
- Assist in the documentation and mapping of archaeological sites and features, ensuring all relevant data is accurately recorded.
- Perform lithic characterization and analysis, developing a foundational understanding of artifact types and functions.
- Capture high-quality photographs of sites and artifacts for documentation and reporting purposes.
- Collect and manage GIS data, assisting in spatial analysis to support archaeological interpretations.
- Collaborate with the project team to ensure that all fieldwork adheres to best practices and regulatory standards.
- Participate in safety training and maintain compliance with health and safety regulations while working in the field.
- Communicate effectively with team members, providing clear updates and insights on project progress and findings.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Archaeology, Anthropology, Paleontology, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of professional field experience in archaeology, with hands-on expertise in survey and excavation techniques.
- Demonstrable skills in lithic characterization, site and feature mapping, and photographic documentation of artifacts.
- Basic proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data collection methodologies.
- Strong understanding of California and Great Basin history and prehistory is preferred, enhancing the technician's ability to contribute meaningfully to project objectives.
- Experience in paleontological monitoring is desirable, giving candidates a competitive edge.
