Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President & Dean of Student Life (AVP/DSL), the Assistant/Associate Director of Campus Community Standards plays a key role in fostering student support and belonging through developing and implementing campus community standards, coordinating intervention efforts for students of concern, and contributing to student engagement efforts by helping to lead and facilitate Sarah Lawrence student orientation and residential education programs. The person in this position will work together with campus partners – health and wellness, student involvement and leadership, campus safety and others to ensure an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Essential Duties Summary

Essential Functions

  • Work with the AVP/DSL to administer and manage campus wide student conduct processes including the development and training of student conduct panelists, management of conduct hearings, and coordination of conduct assessment as a part of ongoing review and improvement efforts
  • Review incident reports and delegate cases to appropriate Residential Life hearing officers and serve as a conduct hearing officer for mid-level hearing cases
  • Respond to student related issues and concerns including crises incidents and/or conduct matters while embracing a restorative practice model and approach in line with Sarah Lawrence values.
  • Serve on the campus Care Team with other key campus partners and provide case management support in concert with the AVP/DSL
  • In partnership with the AVP/DSL, assess, develop and implement campus wide training on matters related to conduct and community standards in keeping with national trends and in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Manage the conduct software-tracking program, Maxient, ensuring that all cases are appropriately logged and closed out, produce mid and end of the year reports on student behavioral trends.
  • In consultation with the AVP/DSL, manage and participate in emergency protocol response for residential life, problem resolution, student advocacy, and manage parent and community relations
  • Partner with Assistant Directors of Residential Education and Housing Operations to oversee the daily operation and strategic planning for the Office of Residential Life which includes helping to manage email communications, room selection process, RA recruitment and staff training.
  • Work closely with the AD of Housing Operations to coordinate and manage the Sarah Lawrence summer housing programs
  • Lead ongoing reviews and updates to the Student Handbook, ensuring policies support student development, well-being, and safety.
  • Develop and deliver training for student leaders and staff on incident documentation, community standards, and case adjudication.
  • In collaboration with campus partners help lead and facilitate key campus programs and events such as new student orientation, residential education programs, and other student leadership initiatives to increase student engagement and sense of belonging
  • Participate in the on-call rotation, responding to after-hours and weekend emergencies within the residential community.
  • Work with the AVP/DSL to ensure departmental initiatives are appropriately assessed and reported on through regular, ongoing assessment efforts, including participation in national benchmarking surveys
  • Attend state, regional and national conferences to stay current with national best practice standards and compliance.
  • Contribute support and expertise to uphold Sarah Lawrence commitment to equity and inclusivity across all areas under purview

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, Master’s degree in student development, educational administration, counseling or related field preferred
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of professional experience in student conduct, Residential Life, Student Affairs, or a related field, with knowledge of student development theory in a higher education setting.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with experience in crisis response and conflict mediation and ability to respond to emergency situations with sound judgment and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multiple campus partners.
  • Experience leading teams and managing complex projects.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotations and respond to emergencies during evenings or weekends.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • A broad knowledge of contemporary student development issues, trends, and best practices, particularly in residence life and student conduct
  • Excellent managerial, planning, interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills
  • A genuine interest and satisfaction in working with students, families, faculty, and staff
  • Experience in conflict resolution management, student discipline and mediation
  • Familiarity with restorative practices as a multifaceted tool used for building and developing harmonious relationships within communities.
  • Must have the ability to use discretion when handling sensitive, confidential and complex student issues.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, strong oral and written communication skills, and acute attention to details.
  • Understanding of legal and ethical considerations in student affairs, including FERPA, Title IX, and ADA compliance.
  • Experience with student leadership development and fostering peer-led programming within residence halls
  • Ability to exercise strong judgment and perform in a leadership capacity.
  • Maintaining a good sense of humor

  • Experience developing and delivering educational programs focused on student growth and well-being.
  • Physical and Cognitive Requirements
  • Moderately sedentary, involving periods of sitting and computer use.
  • Frequent verbal and written communication required.
  • Capacity to organize and synthesize detailed information.
  • Occasional standing/walking/lifting.
